"What advice do you have for the new doctor, new nurse or new paramedic who is just starting out in their career?" This was a question I was recently asked in preparation for a recorded discussion. Here are my notes. 🧭 Stay true to your "true North": conditions, situations and people around you will push, pull, and sway you in many directions, but don't ever lose sight of your moral compass! You want to still like you at the end of the day! 🧭 Stay curious: follow your curiosity, chase down those unanswered questions, poke your nose into what interests you and what you don't understand, don't just take someone's word for it - do your own research, become a detective and an explorer in one! 🧭 Surround yourself in gold: find people you admire and enjoy the company of, people who inspire you and challenge your thinking, get in their circle and learn from them. You're the sum total of the 5 people you spend most of your time with - make sure you choose wisely and surround yourself in gold! 🧭 Reach for the stars: don't be scared or intimidated to approach strangers - some of my most impactful relationships started out as "LinkedIn friends". Some of the most inspirational, innovative and expert clinicians have become easily accessible via the medium of social media. Reach out - most of us love being asked for our opinion! 🧭 Remember the impact beyond your interventions: you make the first ripple - that's the life you saved, right there, in that moment - that's the first ripple. But how far do your ripples go? What is the cost of survival and the quality of the life lived? Care enough to make the right kind of difference to each life you touch! And remember, this occupation you've chosen to spend over 40 hours of your life each week doing, is meant to be enjoyed (and sometimes even loved)! Make sure you love it enough to be giving up your days and nights, and the best years of your life to it! And if it stops being fun, look at the list above, and change it up - it's your one precious life! What would your advice be? #lovemyjob #SavingLivesIsNotEnough #BeBurnsAware #burns #nursing Image: Somewhere between 2000-2003 as a student nurse on operating theatre placement rotation at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

Spent the night in a small tiny cabin on the top of a hill. This cabin was on a working farm, no internet and no distractions. It did wonders for my sanity! We chase things so hard we forget to hit the pause button. So if you’re looking for a job, overworking in your current job, fearing a layoff etc just remember to hit the pause button before you hit the fast forward. #mentalreset #burnout #cliniciantransition #nonclinicaljobs #jobsearch #nursing #physicaltherapy #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #restandrecover

As healthcare workers, we know how hard it is to deal with the loss of a patient or any other casualty. We put our heart and soul into our work, but sometimes it's not enough. We may feel guilty, angry, or hopeless. But we have to remember that we are not responsible for every outcome. We are doing our best in a challenging situation. We are not alone in this journey. We have each other to support and uplift. Let's share our stories and emotions, and celebrate our successes and resilience. We are heroes, and we are human. . .. . #healthcareworkers #notyourfault #resilience #heroes #human#nurses #recruiter #cna #healthcarerecruitment #healthcarecareers #nursestaffing #gypsynurse #nowhiring #covid #nursingjob #surgicaltech #crisisrates #recruiting #covidjobs #ahcstaff

You gotta take ownership of your own career development. Spending on organizations that provide CNEs is money spent well. This mindset should be taught to nurses.
I sometimes hear nurses say, “I don’t belong to my professional associations because my employer doesn’t pay for it.” If you’re leaving your professional development up to your employer, you’ll be in a sorry state. Take personal responsibility for your own career and be proactive with it. -Donna Cardillo #NursesOnLinkedIn #NursePower

CEO of ALIVE with Liliane - Professional Speaker & Women's Personal VIP Coach; CEO of ALIVE in Healthcare; Nursing Leadership Circle© Founder, Leadership Coach, PCC, CPCC, Non-practicing RPN
The most successful nurses are the ones who invest in themselves - in their personal and professional lives. They succeed at being healthier (emotionally, physically & mentally), they succeed in setting boundaries for themselves and with others, they succeed in achieving intentional balance in their lives, they succeed in understanding the impact of their thoughts, words, and actions, and so much more. These are the nurses who do not wait for the organizations to invest in them. They invest in themselves because waiting for others to look after them has rarely worked, if ever. When I hear a nurse who is not ready to work with a coach to help them deal with their struggles and succeed in their professional and personal life, SIMPLY BECAUSE 'the system owes them', I tell them "You are right, the system should be supporting you. And, more importantly, how is that working for you?" It is not, because you remain a victim of your circumstances. It is too easy to blame others or circumstances. It is true that we must address the systemic problem. And in the meantime, what are we doing to ensure that we are living the best possible life for ourselves? Take responsibility for yourself. Other professionals do that, why not nurses?
