If you're unfamiliar with how nuclear decommissioning works, take a quick read. EnergySolutions has some great videos of how it works on their website. As much as building new plants is important to our energy future, dealing with the other end of the life cycle is a critical part of proving that #nuclear #energy is #cleanenergy

Cleantechnica: Part of that is the inability to share lessons learned across dozens of reactor builds. Part of it is the inability to develop a workforce of skilled, certified and security credentialed construction and engineering workers when lots of different nuclear designs are being deployed, each with often very different physical, operational and security concerns.

It would be useful to see the TRUE total capital & operating cost of #nuclear energy plants including construction cost linked to overruns, radioactive waste mgmt and delayed completion. In many cases, construction costs overruns are close to 70%-80%. I'm seeing a lot of misleading comparative data on #nuclear energy costs vs solar, where cost assumptions don't match the real world execution. Georgia Nuclear Plant ; Actual Cost 1.43 X more than the estimate ! A promising alternative to diesel-fired power plants in Northern Canada is being proposed by Westinghouse and Prodigy Clean Energy (based out of Montreal) with the development of transportable nuclear power plants. The technology involves housing a microreactor in a barge which would be used to deliver cleaner power to coastal communities. Prodigy is targeting remote Indigenous communities in Canada given that these power plants could replace diesel-fired plants, which are the main source of energy in these communities due to logistical challenges. These types of power plants are also being considered as a way to power offshore oil and gas platforms, island nations, desalination plants and ports. #renewables #nuclear

Obsolescence is a pressing problem for today’s nuclear power plants. Many times, original analog parts are in limited supply or are no longer available. What’s a plant to do? In situations like this, Curtiss-Wright’s reverse engineering services offer a cost-effective solution for like-for-like replacements. Find out how our I&C team helped Susquehanna overcome their obsolescence issues while also improving the longevity and maintainability of their annunciator systems. https://lnkd.in/gK6fenmV

Congrats Southern Company Georgia Power Company Bechtel Corporation on their latest milestone Vogtle Unit 3, a commercial nuclear reactor built by Bechtel and managed by utility provider Southern Co.’s subsidiary Georgia Power, has begun commercial operations and is now providing power to customers in Georgia, according to the contractor. Power generators like Georgia Power are under close scrutiny by stakeholders around their environmental footprint. Nuclear power can play a key role of moving off other sources to power as well as provide reliable power source that can support the load demands of residential, industrial, institutional, and commercial customers. DOE Study Suggests Major Cost Savings from Coal to Nuclear Power Shift According to the Department of Energy, decommissioning coal-fired power plants and building new nuclear facilities in their place could result in construction cost savings of up to 30%. The key to unlocking these savings? Repurposing as many existing assets as possible from the retired coal plants. These assets include the existing land, the coal plant’s electrical equipment (transmission connection, switchyard, etc.) and civil infrastructure, such as roads and buildings. This isn't just about cost. It's also about our energy future. Nuclear power is one of the most reliable and carbon-neutral sources we have. Transitioning away from coal and towards nuclear could be a major step towards a more sustainable energy future. Of course, there are challenges, but the DOE's findings suggest that the benefits – both economic and environmental – could be substantial. This study should give policymakers and industry leaders plenty to think about. And is possible a game changer for the economics of nuclear power, which has often been criticized for its high upfront expenses. Let me know you thoughts? In response to recent statements by a former supervisor of Taiwan Power Company (#Taipower) regarding the feasibility of restarting the 4th #Nuclear Power Plant (Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant), Taipower emphasized the need for practical and cautious handling of the issue. The former supervisor stated that the plant could be reactivated in 3 years with a budget of NT$30 billion; these claims lack professional evaluation and oversimplify the significant safety considerations involved. According to the 2021 referendum, the majority of public opinion remains concerned about the safety of the 4th Nuclear Power Plant and opposes its restart. Additionally, many of the plant's original equipment manufacturers have ceased production, raising concerns about the feasibility of finding a team to continue construction, which affects both the timeline and cost estimates. Even if there is an intention to continue construction, challenges such as conducting new geological surveys and updating related equipment persist. https://lnkd.in/gyvTaTzk

#Good news from #UK!!! The nation continues doing steps to build its future nuclear fleet, in this context, #SizewellC #NuclearPowerPlant project is expected to commence construction in 2024. The project is expected to generate up to 7% of the #UK’s power need reducing #CO2 emissions by nine million tonnes a year. In addition, #SizewellC is expected to create up to tousands of construction jobs and nine hundred permanent ones once the site will be under operation, and is estimated to add £4bn to the regional economy over its lifetime.
