We are coming and showing landowners new and sustainable options to #restore nature - and live off it. Members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Community Composting Network want to engage with Labradorians like you whose livelihoods and quality of life depend on the waters and lands with which we live. The engagement runs from June 1 to June 30, 2023. The success of a provincial composting cooperative depends on hearing from Labrador residents. The Network moderators of this virtual engagement believe: -Waste management/reduction in Labrador as a regional issue, -Labradorians contribute to reducing waste in innovative ways, -There are economic development opportunities to keep resources in our economy, and -We can restore the land with which we reside to live in harmony with nature. We have ambitious goals to improve economic and environmental performance for those living in and farming in the Rangitīkei district. There are approximately 2,800 farms in the catchment area, which covers approximately 700,000 hectares. We’d love to help as many landowners as possible; however, funding is our biggest obstacle in scaling our efforts. We’re incredibly grateful to our valued partners, past and present, who have helped us get to where we are today. As any farmer can tell you, there’s always more work to be done. We’re keen to work with others who can enable us to expand our efforts and ensure our sub-catchment groups have the support and resources to achieve their long-term goals. Current environmental restoration projects we're seeking support for include; protecting and restoring habitats for native Whio (blue duck) and Dwarf Galaxiid fish populations, protecting native bush remnants, continuing to monitor water quality with macroinvertebrate and eDNA water sampling and analysis and establishing a community nursery to grow natives or poplar poles. These lands are managed largely by the Bureau of Land Management with portions (the O&C controverted lands) managed by the US Forest Service. Forest Bridges Active Conservation management approaches – continuing active and let-grow management – are based on cutting edge science, time-honored Indigenous ecological knowledge, and agency practitioner experience. Using thinning, harvest and carefully applied prescribed fire they Address climate change impacts head on, adding biomass and sequestering more carbon; Build fire resilient forests by mitigating destructive wildfire threats;  Improve and sustain forest health and multi-species habitats; and Protect legacy old growth trees, while supporting the progression of forest aging over time Your financial support will help Forest Bridges build upon our many 2023 accomplishments, which included Submitting to the BLM an adapted version of our O&C Dry Forest management strategies as a proposed management alternative for the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument;  Participating in State and National coalitions - communicating to Congress and the EPA the importance of eliminating barriers to beneficial prescribed fire as a vital treatment tool; and Expanding in 2024 our public base of support – Friends of Forest Bridges -- via community meetings and social media. BIPOC-led and BIPOC-serving community composting projects in New England can now apply for up to $20,000 through the Institute for Local Self-Reliance's BIPOC Community Composters Mini-Grant Program! Funded by 11th Hour Racing, a program of The Schmidt Family Foundation, this program will provide $100,000 in sub-grants ranging from $5,000 - $20,000 to up to 10 selected grantees in New England coastal states.
