Seldom do I post things outside of work-related topics but this one Championship win yesterday has inspired me both personally and professionally. As a Turkish-American woman, seeing the Turkish Women's Volleyball team, the Sultans of the Net, win this world championship is so exciting in many ways. What is wonderful about this is team with an Italian coach and a Cuban Turkish volleyballer, this team worked so well together, supporting each other and encouraging one another throughout the tournament and to watch with their enthusiasm and spirited energy, it was infectious. Because when #womensupportwomen , extraordinary things happen. And the message of teamwork, focus, international community, and following your dream permeates this story and hopefully inspires you in your professional journey and goals. You are not alone in a sea of uncertainty. Know there is a community cheering you on and make sure to surround yourself with those champions that believe in you. Don't doubt your abilities because you have already come so far and the horizon should drive you forward. You have what it takes to overcome challenges and obstacles. I believe we have it inside all of us. Yesterday's victory is a celebration for so many and hope it inspires you to keep dreaming your dream, keep believing, and make it happen because you can. There's a first for everything! Remember the combination of Passion + Purpose = Possibilities Stretch the possibile everyday! #passionandpurpose #stretchthepossible #socialentrepreneur #changemaker #teamwork https://lnkd.in/eccwWBRN

Table Tennis players (and others!)...watch Ivan Toney's brilliant penalty. His eyes on the opponent all the way, to enable a late and correct decision and placement. Previous work meant he knew where the ball was without looking - the execution was pre-built. Once execution is built in, you can work on the really important things - decision-making and reading the opponent, knowing the execution will be there for you (applies to many fields of performance and leadership). #periforalvision

Tennis lovers and other watchers of last Sunday’s historical Wimbledon match between a 36 year old Serbian multi-champion Novak Djokovic and 20 year old Spanish Carlos Alcaraz were probably amazed by this 4,5 hour competition. A match that transcended slices, forehands, lobbies, etc — a master class in itself. Besides, we admired their personalities playing, composure (95% of the time), fair play, physical fit, humility to accept defeat and compliment the contender but particularly resilience — ability to recover from setback and regain focus and stamina to turn the score. Carlitos won this match and was recognized by royalty from host country and Carlos’ Spain but also from tennis royalty, namely Djoko. I am not a specialist of tennis, but maybe there are measures of the percentage that personality traits influence success in a match — I am sure it is very significant. Thus, young tennis players aspiring to top positions in the ranking — watch Carlitos and learn not only about his technique and style but his attitude, behavior at and outside the court. As for companies, seek high potential and champions not only on the most emergent and self-promoting players but probe deeper leadership fundamentals and effectiveness correlated with personality. #personality #resilience #tennischampions #hoganhighpotentialtalent

The Case of Clervie Ngounoue As we celebrate remarkable sports feats, one in particular stands out - 16-year-old Clervie Ngounoue winning the Wimbledon girls' singles title, making Washington DC proud and positioning it as a burgeoning global hotbed for tennis talent. However, this groundbreaking achievement appears to have been under-reported, prompting a necessary exploration into the intersection of representation, gender, and race within the media landscape. Longstanding biases and systemic inequities underpin the under-representation of certain sporting achievements. In particular, we need to discuss racial bias, gender bias, and age disparity in sports reporting. Racial Bias: Historically, media have favored certain athletes, typically white and male. Even though progress has been made, certain demographics and types of sports still receive disproportionately high attention. The groundbreaking achievement of a young black female athlete, particularly in a traditionally white-dominated sport like tennis, may not resonate with these established narratives, leading to insufficient coverage. Gender Bias: The chronic disparity in sports coverage has seen female sports receiving less attention than their male counterparts. Despite advancements, this gap persists. Clervie Ngounoue's phenomenal victory, regardless of its significance, may have been overshadowed by men's tennis coverage. Age Disparity: Junior tournaments, though crucial for the industry and for players' development, typically attract less media attention than senior competitions. The muted reporting of Ngounoue's win may mirror this lack of youth sports coverage. In conclusion, this particular case emphasizes wider systemic issues within media. Racial, gender, and age biases in sports reporting all converge to create an environment where diverse and inclusive stories aren't always spotlighted as they should be, underlining the importance of ongoing efforts to enhance representation and equality in sports media. It's crucial to state that acknowledging these barriers doesn't downplay Ngounoue's achievement. On the contrary, it highlights the magnitude of her accomplishment. Despite these hurdles, Ngounoue and other young, black, female athletes are making significant strides in the tennis world, setting inspiring examples and reshaping narratives along the way. Let's strive to amplify these voices and stories, and in doing so, inspire the next generation of sporting talent. Geoff Thompson MBE FRSA DL QP JM
