Coral Cove Project Update! We are on track with things moving along smoothly at the Coral Cove Auria Senior Living site. 🦺 This week, we received 2863 tons of G7 material, a crucial component used for the restricted backfill to stabilize our retaining walls and a key part of our dry stack walls’ structural integrity. 🦺 G7 backfill is generally used as a base course/backfill under our roads, paving, and retaining walls to maintain the structural integrity of all our projects. The selection of backfill material is influenced by soil type, load-bearing capacity, and environmental impact. We take our procurement process seriously! 🦺 This site had steep slopes and uneven terrain—exactly the challenge we like here at R&B Civils. Our team has steamed ahead with the preparations for these critical platforms. We're looking forward! This NZGS survey is trying to get a feel for our industry's understanding and experience with tiered walls - it's real short and easy to complete, so please do! Tiered walls are challenge for sure - but in my experience most structural engineers and geotechnical engineers know how to design for the situation. The real issue are the pelthora of undesigned tiered walls being built to avoid the need for building consent. Although we, as design professionals, know that they still need consent, the general public think they can build two 1.4m high walls without consent.

In construction, a structure is only as strong as the ground it is built on. Foundational work, therefore, is of huge importance to us all. MENARD Canada Inc. is a leading geotechnical contractor in the region that specializes in ground improvement. Its primary purpose is to assist clients from municipalities and the industrial, private, and public sectors in finding the most cost-effective way of creating the right foundation for their structure. Hubert Scache, President at Menard Canada, explained that Menard works to advance solutions beyond the industry norm. “Most people think that they have to do piles, which is commonly known, and what we are proposing is something in between to improve the ground or to reinforce the ground in order to avoid having a structure which is too complex on the top of piles.” The company’s history dates all the way back to 1971. Originally called Geopac, it was founded in Montreal where its head office is still located. In 1983, Geopac’s owner expanded, opening a second branch in British Columbia. It was there that the team developed its ground improvement techniques with the help of French engineer Louis Ménard. This collaboration eventually led to Menard purchasing the company, changing the name to Menard Canada in 2017. According to Scache and Simon Bunieski, P. Preferred proponent selected for the Reid Highway Interchanges project Mining and civil construction contractor NRW Holdings has been named as the preferred proponent for the design and construction of the Reid Highway Interchanges Project. The A$225m project, funded jointly by the Australian and WA governments, aims to alleviate congestion in Perth’s north-eastern suburbs. Did you know that for the 𝗠𝘀𝗶𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 the pylon inserts are used as the anchors from which the cables run as back-stays to the anchor blocks, and as fore-stays to the bridge deck? However, not all the inserts have to be in place before the launching of the deck can begin! Careful planning will allow the deck launching – itself a highly technical task – to commence after the first five inserts are installed, which is likely to be in the second half of 2024. The Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East project will connect destinations in #Melbourne's east and southeast, including employment, health, education, and commerce centres. The construction of Burwood underground station, located on a brownfield site, presented challenges due to the site’s past history and areas of soft ground. To achieve a stable construction surface, a CBR of at least 5% was required for heavy machinery access. However, granular material is expensive to procure and labour-intensive to install, and the residential location discouraged frequent heavy goods vehicle movements. Contractor Delcon Civil needed a solution that minimised the use of imported materials and addressed soft ground encountered during construction. Our Solution? Secugrid®, chosen for its market-leading geogrid performance, provided reinforcement for the working platform while reducing the need for imported granular material. Its exceptional stress-strain behaviour minimised subgrade deformation even under heavy plant and frequent trafficking. For areas of soft ground, Geofirma® AS200B non-woven geotextile was employed. Delcon Civil was pleased with the products supplied and service received, allowing the project to meet tight timescales.
