Listening is the most undervalued diagnostic tool! This patient of mine brought in a sheet with his concerns and it made me realize how much better we can do to establish a better patient management. ‘Listening’ is a skill that is not taught as part of a curriculum but it surely makes a huge impact during clinical reasoning. Rant Alert 🚨 I have been a strong advocate of collaborative practice in the medical field. A field that has people with subject matter specialization that could be utilized for better patient outcomes. Interdisciplinary team work has shown better patient outcomes. Here’s what happened today- This client came with severe neck pain and stiffness with radiculars down the left arms ( MD prescription attached). During the assessment there were many red flags that I wanted to address to the MD and that’s when the patient received a call from the doctors office ( what are the odds! ) As the patient was talking to the doctor, she said that she’s sitting with me and I would like to talk to the doctor as I had some concerns. Guess what this MD says- “ That’s fine, but can you explain me your symptoms”!!! So this MD wanted the patient who is in excruciating pain ‘Explain’ her symptoms to him, meanwhile he could have collaborated with the treating physiotherapist who assessed her for an hour. I am fortunate to work with some of best medical doctors across GTA who look beyond the 'Pharmacology' model and work with the healthcare team to get better patient outcomes. Patient at the end said- ‘he never listens’!! Questions- 1) what could have been different in this scenario? 2) what could be done to implement collaborative practise with various health disciplines and decrease the burden on the healthcare system? 3) How about the referrals made to physiotherapy or chiropractic clinics read - “ Assess - Treat - Collaborate’? The success of patient care depends on interdisciplinary practice model.
