At Liquid and Grit, our hiring testing system was inspired by Van Halen's playbook. You might have heard of the infamous "no brown M&M's" clause in Van Halen's concert contracts. While it sounds like a frivolous demand, it actually served as a clever safety check to ensure that stagehands had read and followed every detail of the contract, ensuring the safety of the band, crew, and audience. Similarly, our tests always include a few intentional mistakes or omit key information. This was our way of testing a candidate's diligence and attention to detail. We want to hire people who aren't afraid to go the extra mile, do additional research, and find solutions to problems on their own. The candidates we end up hiring are the ones who spot the issues, fill in the missing information, and demonstrate their commitment to thoroughness. I generally prefer actions over words. Have a problem? find a solution, fix problem, move on to next problem. I also recognize that on this platform, actions are less tangible than the words that we post. Maybe we just don't do enough celebrating and recognizing our wins. I'm proud of our work at Bluewater Hayes. Throughout the course of my career, I have found recruiting most interesting when the roles are 'punch you in the stomach hard', the ones that everyone else has given up on, and that's what we do exceptionally well here. Need an Equipment maintenance manager on a Caribbean Island (when none actually live on that island)? - Sure, we'll find you the candidate that has that background but is doing an assignment in California to help support his family. Need a National sales leader for a Specific technology (that maybe 5 companies in the US truly specialize in)? - Oh, the role has been open for a year? Sure - give us two weeks and we'll put a slate of candidates in front of you who no one else could.
