Tartan Today. Tartans continue to be designed and registered with the relevant Scottish authorities, both by large corporations and by private individuals.
Clan tartans are patterns associated with Scottish kinship and identify many Scottish families and their ancestors. They have been an iconic symbol of Scottish culture and kinship tracing its roots to at least the 16th century. There are over 3000 known tartan designs which showcase the diversity of patterns across Scotland. The earliest records of tartan date back to the late 16th century when orders were placed for large pieces of tartan cloth for kilts or plaids in specific clan colours and patterns. Over time certain patterns became attached to particular families or geographical regions. Tartan became an important symbol of Highland culture and clan allegiance. After the defeat of Scottish rebellions in 1745, the British government passed laws in 1747 banning tartan and other aspects of Gaelic culture as a way to undermine the clan system. Deeds should not be for awards and recognition. But we also need to have a system of recognition that is independent and encourages excellence above all. If our system of recognition gets corrupted, the strive for excellence will give way to mediocrity laced with sycophancy and search for patronage. This will discourage and demotivate the struggle and dedicated focus for excellence and creativity, impoverishing us as a society. We need to resist such tendencies across all spaces--- from self, organisations, to our nation. Without a thriving culture where pursuit of excellence is tolerated, supported, and recognised, with space to question and deliberate choices made publicly in a way that is consequential, we will remain stunted and wasted as a nation, where excellence will leave or die, impoverishing us structurally. Who has the mayor’s ear? https://lnkd.in/gKb_BXh9 Machiavelli lived in times noted for political nepotism. Popes and princes were often selected using mysterious criteria, too often based on wealth and birth rather than merit. Machiavelli observed that while it is easy to appoint a person on such a basis, maintaining the person in that position takes a great deal of effort. If a prince can only hold on to their business by the use of consultants he will never be stable or secure. This is because consultants are disunited, ambitious, without discipline and disloyal. They are brave amongst friends and cowards amongst enemies. If they were any good they are after his job, and if they are not any good, why would he want them? Princes must protect themselves from flatterers. Staff need to know that telling the truth will not offend. However, when everyone feels they have free rein to “ tell the truth”, respect is lost. The answer is that the prince must always choose wisely from whom they take advice, and give free rein only to wise people.
