Once you’ve caught the start-up bug it’s hard to shake off.   In 2018, Matt Allen, Matthew Boulton and I founded Pivot Power. I remember it like it was yesterday, sitting around a table at the IET with a dilemma following the collapse of the behind-the-meter battery storage business case: do we update our CVs and go get jobs or do we go large and develop and build the world’s first transmission-connected battery storage and EV charging network….It wasn’t a tough decision.   In the process we opened up the transmission network for business and transformed the industry in ways we couldn’t imagine. Today there is over 400GW of transmission-connected generation and battery storage in development across the UK (I know....not all of it will be built!).   I am so proud of not only WHAT we achieved, but HOW we did it. And I know there is lots more to come from those developments, thanks to the fantastic team at EDF Renewables UK & Ireland.   But now it’s time for a new challenge…Together with some very familiar faces, we have founded Relode to tackle what we believe is the next big barrier to net zero.   We’ll have much more to share in the coming months, so follow Relode and we will keep you posted! As a founder/ceo, I have a tendency to live in the past, present and future all at once. In a way, it’s been a good thing. Stepping up into this role means responsibility, and no more hiding behind “we’re just tech innovators, having fun”. The buck stops with me. Owning the past, navigating the present, planning the future. However, it’s important not to let that defocus you. After all, it’s a laser focus game we’re in. Autumn in Rotorua reminds me of the importance of remaining in the present. The still, crisp air. The glassy lakes. The geothermal steam. The present is where it’s at, and where the focus energy should be. BTW, have you noticed that politicians (even ex CEO’s) switch to obfuscation fast… promising the future, whilst blaming the present on the past sins of their predecessor. Just an apolitical observation.

Energy demand is rapidly increasing and it shows no signs of slowing down. The use of AI is expected to significantly amplify the world's need for power. However, we cannot rely on energy derived from fossil fuels due to the severe and cumulative effects of carbon emissions. The world requires more renewable energy sources, and it needs them quickly.
