In our Oil & Gas Tech Tip of the Month, Eric Uutala reminds us to take cold weather into account for product selection: “With winter months coming up, it may be time to prepare your equipment for extended cold weather storage. As you consider your next steps, it is also important to consider the preservation products you are using, and their tolerance to cold weather conditions for both storage and application. To combat this, Cortec® has developed a series of “Winterized” products meant for use in cold weather months. With a freezing point of -47 °F (-44 °C), VpCI®-337 Winterized can be used as a cold weather alternative to our standard VpCI®-337 for internal fogging applications. If other hydrotesting or water flushing operations are needed, VpCI®-649 Winterized is a better option. With a freezing point of -36 °F (-38 °C), the product can be stored outside and on site, rather than in a heated warehouse. Excellent EPRI white paper on BESS. Published in November 2023 "The Evolution of Battery Energy Storage Safety Codes and Standards" is excellent and a must-read for BESSperts. As well as providing an easy-to-read overview of BESS standards it highlights the major improvements in BESS safety made in recent years. I note with extreme interest and hope that "....there is a proposal to modify NFPA 855 to prohibit the use of clean agent or aerosol fire suppression systems unless UL 9540A testing can demonstrate that use of such systems does not present a deflagration hazard.". The new EPA rules for Effluent Limits from Steam Electric Power plants are going to be hard to satisfy short of a zero liquid discharge solution. Heartland's Concentrator is a proven solution for FGD ZLD (as well as power plant leachate ZLD) and will be a go-to solution for the power industry.

The case study Heartland Water Technology’s LM-HT Concentrator Provides ZLD Treatment of FGD Purge Water Using Flue gas as Thermal Energy Source details a demonstration project by Heartland, in partnership with The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The project evaluated the Heartland LM-HT® Concentrator's capability to treat Flue Gas Desulfurization (#FGD) purge water to Zero Liquid Discharge (#ZLD) using flue gas as the thermal energy source. 📢 ICYMI! The U.S. DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has submitted its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on CO2 pipelines to OMB for review. Key topics likely to be addressed in the proposed rule include 1. Operational and maintenance considerations for all phases of carbon dioxide (supercritical, gas phase, etc.) including leak detection methods 2. Requirements for estimating the potential impact radius for carbon dioxide leaks 3. Material testing and qualification for repurposing pipelines 4. Requirements for emergency preparedness and response 5.
