This is so important. A former employer of mine had an LGBTQIA+ ERG whose only contribution was sending a bunch of staff to a pride parade with rainbow swag to give out. Queer employees need inclusion. They need to feel welcome and like they're on an even footing with their straight, cis colleagues and allies. They need benefits and systems that recognize their relationships and unique needs. It's demoralizing to come to work and feel like you have to hide yourself. You often spend more time with your coworkers than your loved ones, and it hurts to have to hide the latter. And it makes trans employees feel unwelcome when your computer systems put their legal names front & center day in and day out. A company that proactively makes people feel included is going to have an easier time retaining them.

Your LGBTQ+ team members don’t want a drag brunch, they want to feel safe telling a collegue about their partner. Your LGBTQ+ team members don’t want rainbow cupcakes, they want HR policies which explicitly include and protect them. Your LGBTQ+ team members don’t want to hear “love is love”, they want to hear “we recognise that your community are under threat and we commit to supporting you”. Less party, more protection. (Then we can talk about drag brunch) #Pride2023 #LGBTQ #DiversityInTheWorkplace #DEI

For International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, we wanted to shine a light on the fact that one in five (19%) of LGBTQ+ young adults experience bullying in the workplace, and a quarter of them said they went 'back in the closet' when they started work, according to a report from Just Like Us. We have previously discussed the phenomenon of LGBTQ+ employees feeling they had to go 'back in the closet' (which you can read about here: https://lnkd.in/dxskEi-4), and believe that this issue captures why building a culture with a foundation of inclusion and belonging is so important. #lgbtq #inclusion #dei #culture
