Giving yourself the best chance to get the job you really want. I received a message this morning from a former colleague who was looking for some guidance after they had received a number of rejections to roles they have been applying for. I went over their CV, application, cover letter and anything else they use to display their skills, experience and any other pertinent points. What became apparent was that they were heavily dependant on their CV, yet their CV had no tailoring to the role or company they were applying for. I explained that other than their standard CV, nothing about their application process looked like they really wanted to work for that company, or in that job. Remember that almost all roles at the minute are competitive and your application is your first chance to explain why you are skilled, experienced or passionate about the role. In this market, leaving your CV to do all of the work isn't likely to provide you with the outcome you desire. If you want it, tell them why. If you are brilliant for it, tell them why. If you are passionate about the company, tell them why. If you are the perfect candidate, tell them why. If you want to give yourself the best opportunity to get the job, tell yourself to do the best job at platforming who you are!

"I'm happy, but _____" A typical response when people talk about their job. Basic needs are met, so they stay put. The hassle of: ✖︎ Updating your CV ✖︎ Logging into Indeed ✖︎ Searching pages of job ads ✖︎ Filling out application forms ✖︎ Worrying if your boss will find out Enough to think: "It's not THAT bad, I'll give it another month" A month becomes two, becomes three... Before you know it, you're another year in. Except now: → The minor things from before grate on you. → You stop taking pride in your work. → You resent your boss. → You dread each day. → You live for the weekend. → It's Sunday and you're annoyed it all starts again tomorrow. (dramatic but it happens) The point is, if you're being honest, you know whether you'll be happy with the same job in a year. If you wouldn't, do something. And if you feel bad, don't know where to start, or don't want to lose control of where your CV ends up, speak to a recruiter you trust.

Sure, you might tell a white-lie on your resume, but your data portfolio won't cover for you. Your resume is your introduction, a snapshot of your abilities. It's a chance to shine on paper. However, your data portfolio is the true showcase of your skills and capabilities. If your resume doesn't align with your portfolio, it can raise doubts about your abilities. Focus on building a strong portfolio that accurately reflects your skills. Let your work speak for itself and land the job you desire based on your genuine capabilities.
