When Consulting-Specifying Engineer released the commissioning giants list for 2023 they also asked the companies who made the list about the future challenges they could see coming down the line. One that continues to baffle me is the lack of knowledge about commissioning's worth. In a market study by Building Commissioning Association in 2018 which showed the benefits and energy savings for 3 different types of commissioning. New construction commissioning (NCCx): The main benefits with this are reducing warranty call back, longer equipment service life and a strong ability to drive the level of completeness as it is easier to address the construction issues earlier. Existing building Cx (EBCx): The key benefits with this model is through the energy savings and simple payback. The average energy savings with EBCx are around 6% this can be increased further to 10% - 20% with some additional scope. With the amount of money saved on energy costs the average pay back time is coming in at 2 years which is a really attractive model to most owners! Ongoing Cx (OCx): The energy savings on this model range from 5% - 20% with a payback of around 1.5 years. This model has 2 different methodologies one being MBCx or manual. MBCx being continuous and manual being more periodical. This model is intended to be a long term resilience tool. These are just some of the benefits of commissioning and the value it can provide owners. Commissioning should not be an afterthought especially in today's current economic climate where energy savings should be championed so we can push for a more sustainable future! I recognize these figures are from 2018 so if anyone in my network could share some updated figures that would be much appreciated!
