📢On 20 February the GeneBEcon Midterm Symposium was held in Brussels🇧🇪, uniting project partners, stakeholders and policymakers to delve into NGTs legislation and project outcomes. With 80 attendees, it was a dynamic forum exploring sustainability in the bioeconomy💚. 💡The Symposium spotlighted the legislative process with insights from Mathias De Mesmaeker, Irene Sacristán Sánchez and Dr. Jaroslava (Jarka) Chloupková. #research Sustainable fish feed ingredients from a red macroalga and its industrial residues 👉 The red #macroalga Gelidium corneum 🪸 is a species commercially exploited for agar extraction, though with enormous potential for other industrial applications. Researchers led by Teresa Cesario and Marília Mateus of iBB - Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences with the collaboration of CERENA-Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente and Iberagar produced protein-rich extracts 🫧 from the crude alga and from residues of the industrial agar extraction process by applying different extraction and recovery procedures. Extract characterization ⚗️🧪involved teams from IPMA Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, CIIMAR (Porto), UCIBIO, and Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge. The results obtained suggest that the #protein #concentrates are very promising sustainable sources for #fish #feed #production, owing to their essential amino acid content, protein bioaccessibility and antioxidant properties. Great to see our work published in the 'Biocontrol Science & Technology' journal, detailing the creation of an easy to use 'Data Decision Tree' for identifying potential risks of natural substances. We need a more streamlined authorisation process to get natural substances onto the market, which could be enabled by a risk-based approach focusing on the science relevant to biocontrol. With this goal in mind, we have created a Data Decision Tree to be used worldwide in the registration of natural substances as #biocontrol solutions. The work was prepared by experts from member companies of the Natural Substances Professional Group from IBMA. #BioscienceUpdates FUTURECO BIOSCIENCE has recently granted them a new patent (EP 3934428 B1) for a groundbreaking microbial bionematicide technology. This patented achievement highlights the innovative strain B410 of Metabacillus halosaccharovorans, which was isolated from organic farming soil in Almería, Spain. Key Highlights: ➡️ Strain B410: Exhibits strong biofilm production and nematicide properties, particularly effective against root-knot nematodes (RKN) and potato cyst nematodes (PCN). ➡️ Preliminary Results: Notable inhibition of nematode egg hatching. ➡️ First Formulation: Developed as an Oil Dispersion (OD), ensuring a stable dispersion of the active ingredient.
