Kicking off SIAW in Singapore, I attended the launch of the AgFunder 2023 APAC AgriFoodTech investment report, prepared together with Gates Foundation and Agrifutures Australia. As always, excellent report and insightful panel moderated by Louisa Burwood-Taylor with headline takeaways; - 2022: $30bn raised globally in 2022, $6.5bn in APAC across 659 deals, led by Zhongxin ($327mio, China, pig breeding) - 2023H1: $2.6bn in APAC with Top5 countries China, India, Hong Kong, Australia and Indonesia. 342 deals YTD led by EcoCeres ($400mio biomaterials China), Zepto ($200mio egrocery India), and efishery ($200mio, fisheries Indonesia) - Trends towards novel food systems and midstream and Ag biotech, with lower investment in downstream categories including consumer, online and in store retail. - Alternative protein, CBM and Vertical Farming companies continue to face headwinds and negative investor sentiment (with some exceptions). Noted by Matilda Ho that China has an appetite for a better Tofu, invented by the Chinese 2000y ago but in need of longer shelf life, but not necessarily a meat mimic. - The “Funding Winter” of 2022 and 2023 has led to increased active capital flow from government agencies and central funds - Farm syndication continues to progress in China, now around 30% with contract farming platforms consolidating and streamlining operations and driving technology adoption (eg drones) - Ryan Lee noted that Carbon investor confidence has been impacted by credibility and lack of verification, and shift in focus from offsets to insets to meet Scope3/4 emission targets Michael Dean John Friedman

Implementing harmonized regulations for the registration and quality control of agricultural inputs in Africa could have significant economic implications. It would streamline trade within the continent by reducing barriers and costs associated with complying with varying regulatory standards across different countries. This would facilitate the movement of agricultural inputs, such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, across borders, promoting efficiency and lowering prices for farmers. Harmonized regulations would enhance consumer confidence in the quality and safety of agricultural products, both domestically and for export. Consistent quality standards would help African farmers access international markets with higher-quality produce, thus increasing export revenues and foreign exchange earnings. Harmonized regulations could stimulate investment in the agricultural input sector by providing a more predictable regulatory environment. This could attract both domestic and foreign investors, leading to increased innovation, technology transfer, and the development of a more competitive agricultural input market. However, challenges may arise in implementing and enforcing harmonized regulations, including the need for capacity building, infrastructure development, and regulatory enforcement mechanisms. There may be resistance from vested interests accustomed to the existing regulatory frameworks. Nonetheless, the long-term benefits of harmonized regulations for African agriculture could outweigh these challenges, driving economic growth, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable development.
