Darkness: My Canvas. Stories Alight. | Global Filmmaker (Film Producer & Director/Lighting) | Bold Vision. Unleash the Darkness. Ignite the Flame.
In a recent discussion, Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon highlighted a big difference between the U.S. and European film industries: "Producers in the U.S. don’t have the same system of subsidies that European filmmakers and producers have," she noted. This forces American producers to think more about their audiences, which, according to her, makes for stronger cinema. "I’m always a little surprised at filmmakers who don’t think that the audience matters. We are compelled to really interrogate who is going to see a film and who we are making it for, and that forces us into a discussion that I think ultimately disciplines the films in a good way." https://lnkd.in/dkq-H8di This got me thinking about a certain Northern European country, where government grants dominate the film industry. Producers here often operate with minimal financial risk because they’re cushioned by taxpayer-funded subsidies. While this system is meant to support cultural projects, it sometimes results in content that doesn’t really appeal to a broad audience or meet high artistic standards. I believe the solution lies in being more selective with these funds. Art house #filmmakers, who genuinely contribute to the cultural landscape, should receive more robust support. Meanwhile, commercial projects should be encouraged—or even required—to compete in the open market. This would push them to improve in various areas: working attitudes, screenplay quality, visual style, and understanding of international storytelling tastes. Right now, there’s a complacent belief within the industry that their films and TV shows are top-notch and internationally respected. But let’s be honest: major streamers and international discussions on European cinema rarely mention this country. There’s a clear gap between self-image and external recognition. #Producers and filmmakers here need a reality check. They need to understand what international audiences are looking for, take off their national glasses, and be brutally honest with themselves. If they had to compete for funding and audience attention, the pressure would drive higher quality and innovation. This shift would not only elevate the industry to international standards but also give audiences better films and TV shows. Ultimately, breaking out of this subsidized bubble and embracing a market-driven approach could lead to a more vibrant and globally resonant film industry. #FilmIndustry #CulturalBubble #CinematicQuality #EuropeanCinema Deadline Hollywood

What the US needs for film production to STAY HERE! Many years ago, I had a million dollar production.. and the tax incentives were honestly the single most effective lure for my company to do business in the states. In fact, those who may remember the Elizabeth Smart story wasn’t made in Utah… it was in Canada. That wasn’t my show, but you get the gist. Any one else out there looking for tax credits in the states who’ve had difficulty? If so, in which state? And - which state is the BEST for show production (or the WORST!) It can be above the line or below.. and specify if it was episodic, film or what. #content #film #television #production.
I can remember a time when "Singles", "Sleepless in Seattle", and "10 Things I Hate About You" were filmed on location, and the region was a hot bed for filmmaking. Now, British Columbia is a body double for productions like "The Killing", "50 Shades", "Yellowjackets", "Walking Tall" and more. Heck, that wasn't the Montlake Cut in "The Boys in the Boat". Seattle and King County are spending millions to change that, investing in a massive studio complex, and the SIFF Downtown, the former Seattle Cinerama. Thanks to Kate Becker and Markham McIntyre for taking time, around the Seattle International Film Festival, to explain why they believe the industry is important to the region and the economic development aspects of it. Also, thanks to Nuk Suwanchote and the team behind "Thai Guys" who allowed us to peak behind the scenes. KOMO TV Photojournalists TK Johnson, Matt Landers, and Jeff Sorensen all played roles in getting this story to air, and online during a busy week. Supporting Grassroots Independent Film Production: In the dazzling world of cinema, where blockbuster hits and big-ticket productions have the spotlight, there lies an undercurrent of creativity and passion that deserves our attention: grassroots independent film production. As professionals in the film and entertainment industry, we must recognize the invaluable role that the indie sector plays in our ecosystem. Independent films are not just a niche or an alternative; they are the bedrock on which the vast landscape of the sector is built. If we only chase after the grandeur of large-scale productions, we risk overlooking the foundation that sustains our industry. Why is supporting independent film production crucial? Learning Ground for Crews: Independent films offer vital opportunities for emerging talent to hone their skills, experiment, and gain the experience necessary to excel. These projects are often the first step in a filmmaker’s career, providing a platform to learn, grow, and eventually contribute to larger productions. Supply Chain Development: The indie sector stimulates the growth of a diverse supply chain, from equipment rentals and post-production services to distribution channels. This diversity ensures a robust, resilient industry capable of supporting productions of all sizes. Diverse Content Creation: Independent films are a hotbed for innovative storytelling and unique perspectives. They allow for creative risks and the exploration of themes that might not find a place in mainstream cinema, enriching our cultural tapestry. Diversity of Voices: Perhaps most importantly, the independent film sector ensures a plurality of voices. It champions stories that might otherwise go untold and voices that might otherwise go unheard. The path to a vibrant and sustainable film industry is paved by our collective efforts to support independent film production. By investing in indie films, we're not just backing individual projects; we're creating an ecosystem that nurtures talent, encourages diversity, and fuels innovation. #IndependentFilm #FilmIndustry #SupportIndieFilm #DiversityInFilm #CreativeEcosystem

#LA1Shorts Film Festival - selection process, thoughts and tips! As we get close to selection notification for this years entries, we wanted to share some of the factors at play when selecting for our film festival. It isn't as straightforward as you think. We have a group of industry professionals who view the films with us. These judges help with first pass selection, and then we might ask them to watch a smaller selection once we have narrowed things down... Finally, we vote for the LA1 Best Film in the National category. As always, the Lancashire category is up to the audience on the night... The audience vote is tough! Sometimes the count is extremely close, and the types of films in competition can vary greatly, like opinions between judges and audience. This makes it exciting for our audience, but sometimes unfortunate for some really talented filmmakers. We don't always screen everything we'd like to... Perhaps there are similar films or themes, a subject matter that just doesn't really fit with our festival, which is why we encourage local filmmakers to attend our event to understand how we work, and feel our vibe through whats on screen. Don't rush! Rushing to hit a deadline is challenging. On occasions, we've seen a great idea let down by rushed execution. If you're cutting it fine (haha!), drop us an email, send us the rough cut to start with. We might offer some tips and advice for your edit if that helps? Time is interesting... For starters, we have a total screening time for our festival. So we may not be able to fit in loads of 15min films. We need variety so we can sneak in a really well-made 2, 3, 5min film. Tell the story with what is needed, not with all of your footage! Equally, make sure your film speaks with the right tone for a festival. Not every film fits every festival, and not every festival is right for your film, and that's ok. Basics - Story is key, make sure it hangs together! Have good sound quality and keep the credits short! There's probably more tips tricks and advice we can offer. Let us know if we can help, it's part of our ethos. Feel free to add tips and insights below... Meanwhile - Date for the diary Saturday 25th May 7pm start @TheDukesCinema #LA1Shorts Best of luck to you all. Keep rolling! 👍 https://lnkd.in/etXdCGz7
