How are you celebrating STEM day 2023? We’re looking forward to our next Hackathon Challenge with Ulster University Computer Science Department. We’re looking back at the projects that the Ulster students who have spent their year in industry with us have worked on. And we’re researching more commercial placement opportunities that will help us invest in the next generation of STEM students. Research shows that early exposure to STEM subjects lays the foundation for students to explore STEM careers. By supporting STEM education, we are encouraging bright minds to enter tech. In a recent article by Sunaina Kumar, she emphasized a commonplace phenomenon regarding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. "The underrepresentation of women in STEM in every region of the world, and a peculiar global trend about the participation of women is that even though graduation rates are higher among women than men, women are less likely to undertake studies in STEM fields, particularly engineering, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and physics." The compromised involvement and participation of women in undertaking STEM research is a telling story about negative conditioning surrounding the sciences for women. Furthermore, it could negatively impact the overall participation of minorities in STEM subjects. As a social science researcher, my experiences in STEM-based subjects are anecdotal and perhaps not as astute as those of a STEM researcher. However, as a woman, I am thoroughly convinced, and a bit indignant, that I was guided away from real opportunities in the sciences owing to the lack of a "scientific" rigor. Proper and meaningful guidance takes time and dedicated effort. Took a bit to get rolling on this one (a.k.a external and internal grant award administrative processes/compliance and a slight start-up delay) but glad to finally be a part of the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Scholarships in STEM (S-STEM) project with the #GrandCanyonUniversity (Phoenix, AZ) in collaboration with PI Jeffrey La Belle and team. Sometimes, all it takes are interest, follow-through, collaborative teamwork (a.k.a carefully going over ALL the reviewers' comments received the first time and addressing them without getting frustrated. It can be hard, believe me), listening to and working closely with expert and very (com-)passionate grant advisors (looking at you, David Brown and John Krupczak). Indeed, the second time's the charm for GCU and I am very glad to have been a part of the planning to award-phase efforts from the beginning. This 6-year S-STEM Track 1-Institutional Capacity Building project will establish the Multi-contextual Applications for eXcellence in Undergraduate STEM (MAXUS) program at GCU while funding scholarships to 12 unique full-time students who are pursuing bachelor's degrees in Engineering or Engineering Technology. The first-year students will receive 4-year scholarships. Ultimately, MAXUS aims to increase student retention and persistence in engineering by linking scholarships with mentoring and community-building activities to support students from different cultural backgrounds. The goal is to create learning communities that meet the needs of all populations and help diverse populations to thrive in engineering. Faculty mentors will be trained in the application of mentoring approaches that will support students coming from different cultural backgrounds. Further, the scholars will have a dedicated collaborative space on campus in which scholars can mingle, socialize, study, and hold seminars. This space will be located close to classrooms and faculty so that students can find community and social supports, build relationships with peers and faculty, and receive more structured mentoring and training. STEM education should begin as early as kindergarten, according to research, since it increases children's excitement, interest, and exposure. Young students are self-assured, ready to learn, and continuously absorbing from their surroundings; the goal is to tap into their intrinsic and natural interest about the entire environment around them in a holistic manner, which are some of the basic pillars of STEM education. It also enables students to be actively engaged in their own learning and to pursue their own interests, giving them ownership over their education. Fostering the growth of vital life skills and practical knowledge in young individuals is our top priority at Trusity. At yesterday's National Honor Society induction at Pathways in Technology Early College High School a grandmother watched her third grandchild be inducted. The other two grandchildren earned the free 2-year STEM degree in 12th grade, persisted earned a 4-year degree and a master's degree. MDRC P-TECH 9-14 Evaluation "By the end of the first year of postsecondary education, 2.6 percent of female and 1.8 percent of male P-TECH 9-14 students had earned degrees, compared with virtually no students from the comparison group, of either gender. These impacts for both genders are statistically significant".
