With our offices closed today for Juneteenth, we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to honor and celebrate the importance of all that this day represents. Juneteenth commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. This occurred a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and marks the day that all enslaved people finally learned of their emancipation. While it’s been nearly 200 years since slavery officially came to an end, we recognize that there is still work to be done when it comes to tackling the biases and systemic racism that is still present within our society. Whether it be our work through the The Diversity Marketing Consortium to smaller efforts like yesterday’s catered team lunch from Field Trip Catering, a Black-owned business located in Morningside Heights & Harlem, it is core to who we are at SourceCode to continue supporting, elevating, and celebrating the Black community. We hope that everyone will find their own way to do the same (and, not just today!) whether it be shopping at a local black-owned business, celebrating this vibrant community’s contributions to art and culture through books, movies, or music, or educating yourselves about how to be a better ally and supporter. Are there any resources you have found insightful or celebrations you’re participating in? Juneteenth: Joy, remembrance, change 🎯 With #Juneteenth approaching, I am proud to be part of an organization that recognized Juneteenth as a paid holiday, even before it became a federal holiday, and even now, when many don't recognize it as an American holiday. I attended a webinar today that went over facts about Juneteenth. One of which was that you don't have to be black to celebrate Juneteenth.. because Juneteenth is American History. The panel dug into how, on July 4, 1776, black people were not free. So when we think about celebrating independence, we need to have both 4th of July and Juneteenth in tandem—and think about that pivotal moment when both the black community and those of European descent came together in this movement and fought against slavery. We still have a long way to go to continue making positive changes in marginalized communities, but it's a reminder of the positive impact of people coming together to make a change and be a part of the #change. ✊🏼 💡 Check out the following link for resources and guides on impactful ways to celebrate Juneteenth at work: https://lnkd.in/gkCUThBC

What does Juneteenth mean to you? Not just as an individual, but as a leader in the role you’re in. What I hope, and what more organizations and businesses should be thinking, is that Juneteenth means an opportunity to uplift Black Americans. I hope organizations take a look at who they are partnering with and choose the Black-owned businesses to support. I hope they’re all looking at what it means to be an ally — a true ally — as an organization. Here’s my offer to you: If you’re unsure how to do that, if you don’t quite “get” the do’s and don’ts of #Juneteenth, give me a call. Let’s talk. Let’s make a plan so that this time next year, your company isn't just posting a supportive graphic on LinkedIn and calling it a day — you're reaping all the remarkable benefits that come from genuinely championing diversity in your organization.
Today, we celebrate Juneteenth! Declared a federal holiday in 2021 and celebrated by Black communities across the United States long before that, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas resulting in national freedom for enslaved people in America. What is your organization doing to recognize Juneteenth this year? #Juneteenth #Culture #DiversityandInclusion
