The European Union’s (EU) Clean Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a landmark regulatory framework aimed at curbing emissions embedded in imported goods, including steel. By 2026, it will require steel importers to fully measure, report, and pay for these GHG emissions, aligning with imported goods with the stringency of the EU’s climate policies. Read Urszula Szalkowska’s latest article published in the May/June 2024 issue of Steel Times International on why the steel and iron industries must prepare now for more rigorous emissions reporting in compliance with EU methodology to maintain competitiveness in the EU market. 🚧 The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism entered into force yesterday, 1 October. Companies wishing to trade cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen in the EU must now disclose the emissions generated by their imports, and will have to pay for them by 2026. We welcome this next step on the path to climate neutrality and emissions regulation. 👉 Learn more in our Policy Tracker: https://lnkd.in/e7jyPM4F #CBAM #PolicyTracker

September is all about the #CBAM. The European Commission is organising a series of webinars on Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its impact on various sectors. The first, focused on the #cement industry, is happening in just two days (15.09). The next one is devoted to #aluminium. Registration is still open for webinars on: 🗓 #Fertilisers that will be held on 26 September 2023, 11:30-13:00 (CET time), 🗓 #Electricity that will be held on 28 September 2023, 09:30-11:00 (CET time) Registration for webinars on: 🗓 #Hydrogen (to be held on 3 October 2023, 15:30-17:00 CET time) will open on 14 September, 🗓 #Iron and #steel (to be held on 5 October 2023, 16:00-17:30 CET time) will open on 18 September. [#EXPERTOPINION] The #Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM) introduced by the European Union officially came into application early October but what does that mean for #companies? 🔎The CBAM aims to #decarbonize industries by subjecting imported goods to the same carbon price charged in Europe, preventing carbon leakage and balancing competitiveness between European and other producers subjected to less ambitious #climate policies. ♻ The Mechanism will require importers of goods like cement, steel, and electricity to purchase emission certificates matching the #carbonfootprint of the imported products, positing an impulse for strategic evaluation and adaptation of corporate #supplychains in Europe. Importing any of these 6 products into the EU? Do take note of the reporting obligations for importers under the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) as the transitional phase approaches.
As the transitional phase of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, or #CBAM, approaches, the European Commission today published detailed rules & guidance for EU importers and non-EU producers to help them fulfil their reporting obligations. One of the central pillars of the EU’s ambitious #FitFor55 Agenda, the CBAM is the EU’s landmark tool to fight carbon leakage. Carbon leakage occurs when companies based in the EU move carbon-intensive production abroad to take advantage of lower standards, or when EU products are replaced by more carbon-intensive imports, in turn undermining our climate action. In the CBAM’s transitional phase, traders will only have to report on the emissions embedded in their imports subject to the mechanism without paying any financial adjustment. This will give adequate time for businesses to prepare in a predictable manner, while also allowing for the definitive methodology to be fine-tuned by 2026. While importers will be asked to collect fourth quarter data as of 1 October 2023, their first report will only have to be submitted by 31 January 2024. At the same time, dedicated IT tools to help importers perform and report these calculations are currently being developed, as well as training materials, #webinars and tutorials to support businesses when the transitional mechanism begins. #Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM) adopted in the #European #Union (#EU) On 16 May 2023, the CBAM Regulation has been published in the Official Journal of the EU. The CBAM will initially apply to #imports of certain #goods whose production is carbon intensive and at most significant risk of carbon leakage: #cement, #iron and #steel, #aluminium, #fertilisers, #electricity and #hydrogen. The CBAM itself will enter into application in its transitional phase on 1 October 2023, with the first reporting period for traders ending 31 January 2024. The set of rules and requirements for the reporting of emissions under CBAM will be further specified in an implementing act still to be adopted by the European Commission.

On 1st of October have started the #mechanism for adjusting border prices taking into account #CO2 emissions - CBAM - came into force. #CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) is a #mechanism for adjusting border prices taking into account CO2 emissions, which will apply to the import to the European Union of selected goods produced in high-#emission industries from third countries. Ultimately, the mechanism is to impose additional #restrictions and #obligations as well as additional costs on the import to the European Union of selected products produced in #highemission #industries. Below You can find the whole @Deloitte text: https://lnkd.in/dNJRqPAS The #interesting #aspect is that CBAM has been compared to an environmental superhero cape for products. It's like the "green passport" for goods entering a region, ensuring that they meet certain #environmental standards. Currently, most metal production even in the #EU takes place using high-emission furnaces. The problem in this case is both the CO2 #emissions into the #environment and the rising cost of these emissions. According to industry #experts, we are only at the beginning of the road to a green industry, and Polish steel needs ecological alternatives that must be #discovered or #developed, #designed and #implemented.
