Introducing Mia! One of our many amazing interns this summer. Let's see what are her take away so far that it's been almost 6 weeks!
What made you choose to head on this challenging path of being a Storyboard Artist/ Animator?
⏬
Animation to me has always been about telling stories. Watching a character navigate a world that is unfamiliar to you, watching them grow, experience, and adapt is an amazing thing to witness. Storyboarding is where those moments are planned, and animation is where it truly comes to life. For me, being able to contribute to both sides of this process is the
most magical thing to see come together, and I consider myself extremely lucky for this 137 Ewes internship opportunity.
What challenges arise when you have to engage with characters, settings created by others in order to do your portion of the creative work?
⏬
I’ve found many times that as I read a script or layout I get a firm idea in my head of how I think the scene should be. As I begin to draw these ideas out, they will of course bump and contrast to how other people might view it. In each of these situations communication is always the best answer, be it between team members, those who worked on similar scenes, and the director. Good communication drives these inconsistencies to be resolved, and can even improve your own work in ways you never thought of. I can think of so many scenes I’ve animated or boarded that were not in my original draft, yet are now my favorite part because of ideas that arose from such communication.
What did you learn this summer that differs from school setting?
⏬
How to keep an open mind! When working on projects in a school setting you are usually aware of those you work with as you are in a similar location and coming from a place with similar knowledge, but with 137 Ewes Productions there are interns from all over the world. This provides us with different backgrounds, cultures, and knowledge so that we can get a unique perspective on all of our work. It is truly an eye opening experience to get so many different yet amazing ideas, and I truly believe that my work has increased tremendously in quality simply by listening and learning from all my peers.
Let the world know three items [or thesis] about you as an animation artist.
⏬
What I strive for in animation and story-boarding alike is emotional
attachments. When I’m working on a scene that involves a character I want the audience to understand this character on a deeper level through their mannerisms, the scenery around them, symbolism, and their expressions. When planning out any scene one of my top goals is always to make the viewer feel something towards whatever or whoever is on the screen. I
focus a lot on these aspects because it's important that the viewer isn't simply watching an event unfold, but is experiencing the event alongside the characters.
