2/22/2024 33 years ago today, Captain James VanHorn put me in front of the Honorable District Justice Michael Koury. I raised my right hand and swore to uphold the Oath of Office as a Police Officer for Palmer Township. Since that day, I have learned a few things: I have not chosen a Job or Career, not just a Profession, but a way of life. I was chosen to do this. I have seen things, things you would wish you hadn’t. I have done things; you would never think of doing. Some things that I am proud of, some I am not, and yet would do them again anyway. I have made a lot of acquaintances. Most of the friends I had, I lost the minute I became a Cop, and yet have gained life-long friends because of it. My Family has sacrificed but has been supportive. I know love. I am a Husband, a Father, a Son, a Brother and an Uncle. I know loss too (RIP 56, 49 & 1229). I have grown accustomed to the fact that I am ALWAYS watched. I am never NOT a Cop. YOU are not trustworthy and a liar, until proven otherwise. I must live my life consistently thinking, “How will this look to my Family on the front page of the Express-Times?” I have made decisions that affected the lives of others, some in a good way, some bad. Sometimes “The System” works, sometimes it does not. Some of my enemies, I can not see. My head must be always on a swivel. That my vest not only protects bullets fired at my chest, but also from knives in my back. I have been around enough to see them come and watch them go. I’m now that old guy. The guy who jokes about Adam 12, Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue, but they don’t get it. My name is now number 1 on the Department Roster. I am now required to have the answers, and no longer the one asking the questions. I miss it when I’m off, yet when working, can’t wait to be off. I realize that I not only get paid for what I do, but also for what I may have to do. It has its ups, and it has its downs. I know no one but US will truly ever get OUR way of life. I love it, and I hate it…..but knock on wood, I have now survived 33 years of it.
