When it comes to investing in the professional goals of our employees, Senior Financial Analyst of Transportation Joseph C.’s DG career journey is a true testament to this. Joseph began #ServingOthers in 2020 as an assistant store manager in Kannapolis, North Carolina. After sharing his career goals with his DG leadership, Joseph began as a licensing specialist at the Company’s Store Support Center in Goodlettsville, Tennessee in 2021 and since then, has held increasing roles of responsibility to now supporting DG’s supply chain financial operations and strategies. “From working at my local store in North Carolina to today serving the Company’s Store Support Center in Tennessee, I’ve learned that at Dollar General, Serving Others is more than a mission – it’s a way of life that drives all of us each day, in every role and part of the business,” shared Joseph. “Our store teams are fundamental pieces to the communities they serve, and it’s been fulfilling to see how our business revolves around supporting our associates, and ultimately serving our communities. I am grateful for my leaders and mentors at Dollar General who have empowered my goals and supported my career growth.” Want to grow with us too? Visit careers.dollargeneral.com.

It’s Story Sunday! Happy Mother’s Day! Two weeks ago I posted about my recent career transition. I spent 30+ years in supply chain and logistics. During my 30+ years: - I started delivering furniture and worked my way up into management. - I managed every department and promoted upwards. - I went back to college earning both my Bachelor’s and Master’s in Business. - I finished my Logistics career as Director of Operations. After careful examination, I changed to a different career… Financial Services. Starting a new career, I’m reminded I’m: - the new guy - starting from the beginning - uncertain of what’ll happen After nearly two years in the industry, I’m more confident today I’ve made the right choice. Now I can help families: - build wealth - protect assets - leave a legacy DM to find out how!

You can’t beat a person with tenacity, dedication, confidence, and optimism… Here’s why 👇 🤓 When I first started little league I was scared of the ball, picked dandelions in the outfield, and was tiny 💪 I finished my baseball career as an All-Conference center fielder, team captain, and had multiple college offers —— 🤓 I started in football as a small, weak, hesitant player who didn’t see the field much 💪 I finished as an All-State honorable mention, team captain, and a 175lb strong safety who teams had to game plan around —— 🤓 I started my career in Logistics as an asset dispatcher who knew nothing about trucks, freight, or supply chain in general 💪 I left as one of 3 directors at the headquarters of a $600 billion + company —— 🤓 I then joined multiple companies looking for the right spot and because of different reasons I was let go or laid off from all of them 💪 Now I am at a company who empowers me to use my knowledge, allowed me to bring on one of my best friends (an ex-shipper) as my partner, and has opened the door for exponential growth —— 🦾 I never gave up 🦾 I never lost confidence 🦾 I never listened to what others had to say 🦾 I never stopped 💯 I either WON or I LEARNED —— 👉 Keep it simple 👉 Don’t blame others 👉 Go get it 👉 Don’t stop 💯 #handleit —— #logistics #supplychain #transportation #freight #logisticsmanagement #logisticscompany #transportationmanagement #freightbrokers #shippers #carriers #freightbrokerage #truckingindustry #efficiency #business #logisticssolutions #sales #truckdrivers

Robert & Emily’s Success Story: Part 2 Robert was active, ambitious, and hardworking. He wanted to work better and faster, so he invested much effort, diligence and energy when carrying out even the smallest assignments. This young man quickly perceived the information and demonstrated his skills and abilities, which his leaders noticed and greatly appreciated. Robert loved his job and the people he worked with, but he knew he had the potential to do more. Robert was always looking for ways to improve his work and take on more responsibilities. Within a few months, he was appointed Warehouse Supervisor, and now he trained new subordinates and supervised some production processes. And then… #ArgoBrands #ArgoBrandsLLC #ArgoFamily #Robert_and_Emily_career_story #Robert_and_Emily_career_story_part2 #careergrowth #careerdevelopment #proffesionaldevelopment #proffesional #opportunities #synergy #wechangetheworldtogether #ecommerce #workingremotely #successjourney #successstory

Board Chair/President. Advocate. Leader. Visionary. “Doing the greatest good for those in the greatest need."
I love it when I get to talk with young people about careers, the importance of work and where the self fits into it all. I had a wonderful time a few weekends ago giving this talk and engaging in Q&A afterwards. I was really excited when a young man who was about 17 years old came up afterwards and said what struck him the most about what I said was hearing that he was the CEO of his own life. Here’s an excerpt from my talk… “Most people will tell you they work for such an such a company. But you are ultimately the CEO of your own company...it's called your life. You are the finance director, the manager of operations, the human resources director and the line staff. Everyday you go to work, you get to decide how well your company will do. You get to forecast and project future revenues and expenses, you get to determine annual income, you get to determine the quality of your relationships and you get to develop an annual strategic plan with goals and objectives. In other words you get to decide if you will be JC Penny's or Macy... Family Dollar or Target. Today know that success is not determined by your boss, your company, or any other external business entity. It's only determined by the corporation in your mind. The Company of You, LLC Where will your company be 5 years from now?”

The year was 2002 - I was 18, in New York. A full-time commuter student at CUNY Hunter and a part-time assistant manager at The Body Shop in Kings Plaza Mall in Brooklyn. I felt so proud to be called a MANAGER, with my $8 per hour pay compared to my high school job that paid $4 per hour. My first day was so exciting! Maria was the store manager and my boss, was a beautiful woman with long locks, soft-spoken, and had a magical presence. I was intimidated. Maria showed me the products, the register, and explained that I had to learn the ingredients. At the end of the night, I had to learn how to count the money, put it in a deposit bag, and there was more - a ledger where we recorded our numbers, compared them to last year, and calculated if we were up or down. It was A LOT. I felt like I did horribly. I remember nothing. I thought I sucked at this job. At the end of the day, Maria said, “Thank you, you did great! Can’t wait to see you tomorrow.” 21 years later, I still remember that day. I remember Maria (our paths did cross again). Maria was my mentor while I was in retail well into my late-20s. Maria, a true leader, is always in my mind. If you are in a place to tell someone they did great, do it. Even if it isn’t fully true, they’ll remember it forever. #CareerJourney #Leadership #Mentorship #RetailManagement #FirstJob #ProfessionalGrowth #NewYorkCity #CUNYHunter #TheBodyShop #WorkplaceInspiration #WomenInLeadership #EmployeeDevelopment #CareerMemories #RetailIndustry #ManagerLife #Brooklyn #KingsPlazaMall #EarlyCareer #Motivation #Encouragement

One of the biggest insecurities people have when considering moving into the Chief of Staff role is a lack of financial acumen. This is what I coach: *CONFIDENCE is the biggest barrier here, NOT the lack of skill.* Skills can be built. And so can confidence. Just like learning the ins and outs of a special project, process, or technology, we can also LEARN to build our financial acumen. Chief of Staff work varies so much due to industry, company, size, maturity, and so many more factors. And financial metrics, KPIs, and business drivers are dramatically different from role to role, regardless of being in a Chief of Staff job or not. For example, what I needed to know financially to drive my business at Nordstrom was COMPLETELY different from what I needed to know at T-Mobile. The Chief of Staff role is a GENERALIST position. The *ability* to dive in is important, not the starting point. Knowing how to set yourself up for success and where to spend your time to learn something quickly is the most critical. Here is a post where I give step-by-step actions you can take to build your financial acumen as a new Chief of Staff: https://lnkd.in/gpsNss2Y Chiefs of Staff are GENERALISTS. To set yourself up for success, learn the most important financial metrics and have *confidence in your ability* to dive in deeper when you need to. #chiefofstaff #executiveassistant #leadership

Having a District Manager who stops into your store often does not mean it’s a bad thing. A DM who wants to keep on top of what’s happening and what needs to be done at their stores is a valuable asset. Be happy they are on top of what’s happening in their district.
