“It is incredibly special to once again work with the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and Hellmann's this year in Nashville,” shared JR Motorsports and NASCAR Xfinity Series driver, Justin Allgaier. “To be able to give back to these kids is definitely an amazing experience. We had an unbelievable looking car this year and it was great to be able to get on the track and help spread the word about the ‘On Track to Read’ program.” The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) and Hellmann’s recently partnered with #NASCAR driver, Justin Allgaier, to support East Nashville Hope Exchange in Nashville, Tennessee by surprising them with a $20,000 literacy grant, giveaways to teachers and students, a book reading by Justin and a NASCAR car presentation. #ServingOthers #DGLF #Literacy Unilever #Nashville

As I prepare for North Texas Giving Day, I think about all the important, interesting, and researched information that I can share about why the mission of Move the Runner is so passionate and relevant to me. Linda Flanagan has authored an insightful contribution to this conversation that I must share! Take Back the Game Flanagan delves into a national obsession that has done many things including reduced access to sports for low-income families. The status of #youthsports, #specialadmissions for athletes, and #collegepipelines are current issues with real implications for #firstgen families. The challenges are pervasive and until we can create reform, Move the Runner is working to provide financial and educational #extraordinaryopportunities to low- and income-restricted families to play ⚾️🥎 and apply to college. How to Write the Activities and Additional Information Sections of the Common Application: For students in a hurry, the Activities section of the Common Application appears to be a fill-in-the-blank. However, rushing through it is not a good idea. The Activities section is the foundation upon which the entire application structure is built! It’s an essential and critical piece of the applicant’s holistic picture. There are only ten slots and 300 characters total to tell the admissions rep why each activity matters and how it furthers your story. It’s important to think about why an activity matters. Is it more important to share that you led the team in goals or that you started the Compliment Box on your soccer team to counteract the competitive vibe between players? The answer depends on you so we’ll decide that together! When a student has more than ten activities, we use the Additional Information section strategically to expand on their interests. “Soccer Spelling” is a new way kids can score on the soccer field AND in the classroom! Read Ready Covington and Covington Parks & Recreation know that children learn best through experiences. That's why they've teamed up for “Soccer Spelling.” It’s a fun new game where kids spell out words when they kick the soccer ball onto specific letters placed inside a soccer goal (check out the photo below), and score points. Kids can play the game alone or with friends and family. (But it’s probably a lot more fun when the whole family joins in so kids can try to beat the grownups!) “Soccer Spelling” includes games like “Kick it! Say it,” “Corner Shot Goals,” “Taking Turns is Good Teamwork,” and “No Repeat Letters.” (Find the details/rules to each game in the flyer below.) To play, just bring your soccer ball and look for the “Soccer Spelling” goals that are located in Austinburg Neighborhood Park (in the FFC soccer pitch) at 502 E. 15th Street, in Peaselburg Park at Howell & W. 23rd streets, and in Randolph Park at 226 E. 8th Street. More locations to come, so watch for updates. Now start scoring those goals and words! About Read Ready Covington: Along with the use of the free digital apps Footsteps2Brilliance and Clever Kids University, Read Ready Covington works to promote fun experiences and tools with families that will encourage curiosity and thinking skills. RRC organizes regular literacy events in housing communities around Covington, solicits donations of books to give out, supported the increase of Little Free Libraries, and has installed five Word Walks around the city. Why? Because it’s important to strengthen early brain development, which primarily occurs after birth and before age six, and because every child needs the skills and foundational knowledge necessary to be “read ready” when they enter school. #ReadReadyCovington #earlybraindevelopment #readready #earlyliteracy #CovingtonKy #lovethecov

Learning through analogies is very powerful. Last night at the Swim Team banquet, the kids around me learned about the Electoral College! Each age group gets 3 awards: MVP, Coaches Award, and Most Improved. The younger age groups have a few dozen swimmers. The older age groups have comparatively few swimmers. So a 6 year old boy is competing against ~20 peers for those awards. A 16 year old boy is only competing against ~4. Some of the kids near me picked up on that (clever kids) and were complaining about the injustice. As I attempted to withhold my thoughts on whether it was just, I did take a moment to explain how similar this was to the Electoral College, where less populous states are like the less populous age groups. Easier to get elected, and the winners represent fewer people. Analogies can be powerful for learning (not that any 6-year-old swimmers truly learned much about the Electoral College last night). Many folks struggle with promoting and developing data literacy. Understandable analogies can be helpful. If I needed to explain the deceptiveness of taking an average of averages, the unequal distribution of swimmers across age groups could serve as a great analogy. #dataliteracy

Celebrating the Unsung Heroes, Parents Behind Young Footballers’ Dreams As the English football season draws to a close and league champions are crowned, it's time to celebrate the unsung heroes behind the scenes: the parents. These dedicated individuals make immense sacrifices to support their children’s dreams of becoming professional footballers. On the way up, in the academy system, parents bear significant financial burdens, from purchasing costly equipment to covering training fees and travel expenses for matches. Their time investment is equally substantial, often involving long drives to practices and games, all while balancing work and other responsibilities. The emotional journey is filled with ups and downs. Parents provide unwavering support, helping their children navigate the pressures and setbacks of a competitive environment. Social lives are often put on hold, as family schedules revolve around football commitments. Despite these challenges, the rewards are profound. Parents watch their children develop discipline, teamwork, and resilience, essential traits for success on and off the field. As we celebrate the achievements of professional footballers, let’s also recognize the parents who played a crucial role in their journey and those who are currently supporting the future stars of the game. These young athletes didn’t start with agents or endorsements; they started with the steadfast support of their families. As we applaud this season’s champions, we honor the parents who are the true backbone of their children’s football dreams.
