Interesting discussion today with Sarah from Grove Learning Trust. What strategical and practical roles can governors play and lead in schools when it comes to inclusion and when a school is going for the inclusive school award with IQM.

Inspired by Austin Kleon's fantastic book "Show Your Work," I am excited to share a glimpse into what I am currently working on! Right now, Madhavi Nagviskar, Neha Achhpal and I are neck-deep in creating a comprehensive list of Professional Development (PD) topics specifically tailored for educators in DYPIS Franchise Schools following the CBSE curriculum. This project is all about empowering our amazing teachers with the resources they need to excel and bring the CBSE curriculum to life in their classrooms. Why am I sharing this? Well, as Kleon suggests, showing your work isn't just about bragging. It's about sparking conversation, gathering feedback, and fostering collaboration. So, here's where you come in! Do you have any suggestions for PD topics that would be valuable for CBSE educators? Perhaps there's a specific skill you think needs more focus, or a teaching methodology you'd love to see explored. Let me know in the comments! Your insights are invaluable in shaping this program. #ShowYourWork #AustinKleon #DYPIS #FranchiseSchools #CBSE #ProfessionalDevelopment #Educators #Teachers #Collaboration #Learning

If we expect teachers to differentiate for students, why are we not differentiating our PD for them? #SchoolLeadershipReimagined #SchoolLeader #SchoolPrincipal #Principal

Principal, Dayton Primary School: Department of Education, Western Australia. ACELWA Branch Executive
Zmunda, Kuklis and Kline (2004, p. 5) stated that “if we know better, why don’t we do better?” Unfortunately, as Hall and Simeral (2008, p. 5) noted, “the gap between knowing and doing is more famously vast in education than in any other profession.” In terms of the latter, I have very much found this to be the case. As a principal, I know what I need to do and I know what needs to be done; however, getting the structures in place to do this takes a very long time. It requires a great deal of patience to build a school personnel’s capacity to a level that makes sustainable changes to learning and teaching in such a way that it does not just impact the school I work in but influences the entire system. At a former school, this was a 16-year journey that influenced the school in terms of student achievement and teacher capacity. It also involved developing the leadership team’s capacity, mine included, to enable them to lead, enact, and embed the practices that made the difference to what we were trying to achieve. Ultimately, this effort moved beyond the school and influenced the system, some of what we are now seeing being played out through recent developments across the WA Department of Education. However, as a new school, with a new team and, despite Rachael Lehr and I having worked together in the previous team, we find ourselves in a new context, with new people and, as Hall and Simeral correctly stated, we find that “the gap between knowing and doing” is once again a major component in the achievement of everything we aspire for Dayton to be. In coming together as a team, each of our staff brings something different to the table , and while that difference is what ultimately makes us what we are, there needs to be a level of sameness about what we do. It is the balance of sameness and uniqueness that takes the longest to establish. We have to ensure that staff don’t lose the sense of who they are as a teacher (and we don’t want this to happen), while at the same time ensuring that what we are (ubuntu), what Dayton stands for and looks like, is not compromised in doing that. Each of our staff is learning how to work within the established instructional framework that for everyone, regardless of what they know or don’t know about explicit instruction, is new. Each of them is working at their own pace as they adopt new instructional practices. Some of them are still working to become comfortable with unfamiliar practices, others are refining their practices within familiar structures, but they are all working hard to get it right and to feel like they are contributing to our why. As a school leader at Dayton, and someone who sees what is happening in classrooms, has conversations with staff in the playground, in their rooms or in the foyer as they enter or leave the school, I can assure them all that they are contributing. What they are doing is making a difference for the kids in our school.
