I help people in Systems & Requirements succeed at their jobs quickly. To explore if or how I can help your engineering project or career with my courses or trainings, grab a spot on my Calendly below.
SYSTEMS ENGINEERS - HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR CAREER! How do you see yourself as an engineer? What is your engineering IDENTITY? Here are some ways we can see ourselves. Consider which one is best for long term success in a medium to large engineering organization. 1. I've come this far on my own. I'm not a guy that needs a lot of help or collaboration. I walk alone! (Solo Performer) 2. I care about my career - and I understand that the greatest successes come from teams and from collaboration. I fit in well with teams. (Team Player) 3. My worth and value are related to my technical expertise. I am a workhorse performer, and people can count on me to get the job done. (Technical Expert) 4. "I am an engineer." vs. "I currently do engineering." (Who I am vs. What I do) Answer key? No. 1 - Solo Performer - will work at first, but get you in trouble long term. You will have impact as an individual contributor on small projects, but you probably will not be picked as a team lead. I had some of these attitudes in the past, and it bit me in my career. I've also seen solo performers run 'rear guard' efforts against managements wishes, and wreck a lot of havoc on a program. If you are caught doing this, you could be fired. No. 2 - Team Player - will take you far. It centers on doing one's job, and in a way that aligns with the team. Teamwork is a value. Take this one on. No. 3 - Technical Expert - will help at first - you'll be known as a solid performer. If you never want to go into management, and still work well in teams, this can work long term. Continue to learn new and useful skills to maintain your technical expertise, and mentor junior engineers, and you'll be OK, but possibly limited in your ability to be a chief systems engineer on a major program, or a line manager. No. 4: "Who I am vs. What I do". If we can move to the latter perspective, we have a great chance to pivot to new jobs, levels, even careers. When I "am" an engineer, but currently manage a department - there is an internal conflict that can sabotage our careers by driving the wrong behaviors. When engineering is something we DO, not ARE, that opens the door for doing something that is not engineering per se, WHILE PRESERVING OUR INNER CORE. The good news is WE CAN CHOOSE OUR IDENTITY - how we see ourselves! This means we can choose an EMPOWERING and USEFUL identity based on our goals. IF WE DO NOT CHOOSE our identity, or are unaware of what it is - then upbringing, society, parents and colleagues will be unconsciously driving our behavior. This is not what we want. Congratulations! This was a big one. Comment below, what you think of this message! For over an hour of more tips, opt in here: https://lnkd.in/ghZQKXug You will not be spammed or inundated! #systemsengineering #identity #teamplayer
