Ensure everything works smoothly to avoid any technical issues at the last minute. 📸 2. Test the Camera Test your camera to ensure it works and check what’s in the frame. Make sure you are well-lit and clearly visible. 👔 3. Dress Smartly Dress smartly. Remember, it’s still an interview, and you need to look professional. 🏡 4. Ensure an Appropriate Background Make sure your background is work-appropriate. If you don’t have a suitable background, use a virtual one. ⏲️ 5. Be Early Be in the virtual waiting room at least 10 minutes early. Always be prepared to be let in and stay at your chair, ready to start. 🔕 6. Remove Distractions Remove distractions. These are great interview tips… especially the bullet on personal social media. Look even after you get the job you shouldn’t be adding anyone to your personal social media without asking them first because many professionals like to maintain separation from work and our personal lives. The only time I’ve added people from my professional networks is after sharing a few beers and some deep personal experiences. You really should feel not only that you know someone but have made an everlasting bond and that you share some of the same core values. That being said I’ve only added a few people to my social media in my entire career. So, don’t be that person that sends everyone you work with FB, iG or now TikTok invites because they probably don’t want to merge their work life to their personal life.
Interview bloopers: we often hear about candidate horror stories when interviewing; here’s what it’s like to be on the other side of the table: ▶ Don’t recite your CV: I’m interested in your story, not a word-for-word replay of your CV. Share insights, not a script. ▶ Respect boundaries: It’s okay to send an email to follow up on your interview. But adding me on Instagram right after our interview is not networking; it’s just creepy. ▶ Do your homework: Asking "So, what does your company do?" after I’ve explained it for 5 minutes shows that you weren’t listening or didn’t bother to check our website. ▶ Be honest: Claiming you’re an expert only to stumble on basic questions later in the interview isn’t a great look. It's okay to be learning; it's not okay to exaggerate. ▶ Interviews are dialogues, not monologues: If you’ve been talking non-stop for 15 minutes, you’re probably interviewing yourself and alienating your interviewer. It's really not hard to stand out — be kind, prepared and respectful.
