📃Scientific paper: On some elusive aspects of databases hindering AI based discovery: A case study on superconducting materials Abstract: It stands to reason that the amount and the quality of big data is of key importance for setting up accurate AI-driven models. Nonetheless, we believe there are still critical roadblocks in the inherent generation of databases, that are often underestimated and poorly discussed in the literature. In our view, such issues can seriously hinder the AI-based discovery process, even when high quality, sufficiently large and highly reputable data sources are available. Here, considering superconducting and thermoelectric materials as two representative case studies, we specifically discuss three aspects, namely intrinsically biased sample selection, possible hidden variables, disparate data age. And we’re off! The first couple of days in Lisbon have been brilliant with loads of connections made already. Kicking off the first formal session now though on the global regulation of AI 🤓 Amazing insights from Andrew McAfee from MIT as he tackles one of the biggest topics in AI right now 🧠 The power of permissionless innovation 🔗 The tension between permissionless innovation and the upstream governance being sought by global governments when it comes to AI 🎯 Are we over focussing on regulation of AI specifically? There are other “high stakes” technological tools in our innovation toolkit that aren’t in the frame for such significance upstream governance 👩💻“We don’t know where the innovators will come from; don’t handicap them” The parting thought from Andrew - regulators are looking at the path we face on AI regulation as a choice between micromanagement and turbulence. The reality is that we could easily end up with both.
