“Stop, you can't do that. I already have £5m sitting; we’re just waiting to see how best to distribute it”. The above words are from an utterly splendid chap of generationally private education, who is carving out their next income stream, with support from several Edinburgh investment firms. School friends. My heart sank when I heard it. In contrast, as a 110kg 6’4ft sprinter nobody, more familiar to arson, robbery, stabbings & GBH on his walk to primary school; I felt deflated to hear that nothing is really changing. We’re not moving the needle, gentrification has polished our impoverished areas, but not dealt with the cause nor the effect. Perhaps we’re just better at turning a blind eye to it all now. We’re not harvesting the talent we need, because we’re not growing the fields. On the subject of pulling yourself up in life and the inability to change your stars, Morgan Freeman calls bull$£!t. And yet, despite the wise insight from the millionaire actor, the numbers suggest that those born into generational socio-economic deprivation, who manage to change their stars, are less than 1%. He does however go on to say that those of us who do manage, have a duty of kindness to pave a better way for others to do the same. For me personally, (just the hand I’ve been dealt, not all others) that’s best done via physical activity for the following reasons: - Benefits of regular social interaction, support, communication, opinions of similar, inspiring and challenging perspectives, broadening of thinking and horizons of what’s possible. - Overcoming Challenges and Achievement. You should learn something new every day... even if that thing is that exercise sucks and jogging is the worst thing on the planet. I hate it. Gravity is the devil. - Life Expectancy, Physical and Mental Health Benefits; they’re endless. - It's easy - there's more PTs than KGs; it aint rocket surgery. For £4k I can land a life changing, FREE gym into any community, which achieves all of the above and far more, for hundreds of people. For £40k I’d have them across the highlands and borders, for thousands of people. For £140k I’d equal the number that Pure Gym have in Scotland. For £1.4m we’d have 370 across the UK, again equaling Pure Gym, but riddling communities with FREE exercise, within a community for all ages, making fitness a completely free commodity for all. So what on earth was this genuinely lovely, charismatic, privately educated, networking guru going to do with the £5m he has sitting!? I’d put money on it not being 1,200 Free Fitness facilities across 4 countries. In which case, until philanthropy finds it’s way to common sense, instead of those well networked to play the game; we must support initiatives which do exist. Until then, this one appears to be a leader, at least for this location. I applaud them for helping the next generation in hopefully producing those who will both change their stars, and hopefully move the needle 👏

Giving back is so important
The Akron Marathon is tomorrow. Weather is set to be great, and the energy will be through the roof. It’s a day where some of us get to give back. It’s a day where we are the legs for a friend of ours who can’t use his. A team of 5 gets to push Dre along the Blue Line once more. Can’t wait. Congrats to the Akron area YMCA for their Expo sponsorship as well! Give back where you can - everyone needs it! #akronmarathon #akronareaymca
