In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement, countless organisations made pledges to move the DEI agenda forward. Sadly, we’ve seen very few organisations instigate real change as a result. Yara International is one notable exception. This global, 17,500-strong organisation has a crucial mission – to develop the knowledge required to responsibly feed the world and protect the planet. As you might expect from such a globally aware organisation, Yara is very diverse, with employees spanning 60 countries. Yet, internal disruptors Fernanda Lopes Larsen and Anika Jovik, both Black women in senior positions in Yara, recognised the need for an expert partner to help the organisation mature its approach to Race diversity, equity and inclusion.   We embarked on a three-year partnership with Yara, first using a number of tools and proven approaches to gauge whether they had the right conditions to become a high-performing, inclusive organisation. We then built a leading-edge, global strategy to transform them into a racially aware organisation and a leading light of diversity within their industry. The results have been truly remarkable! Today, on 31st of August, is the International Day of People of African Descent. On this day, Yara is raising awareness for the eradication of all forms of discrimination against individuals of African descent. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are topics close to my heart. As an #advocate of these three principles, I deeply recognize the importance of collaborative efforts among companies, society, and non-profit organizations to create a systemic change that will truly create a positive impact on people's lives. I declared myself as an ally to these causes within Yara, as I feel it is my obligation and responsibility to use my position to tackle the eradication of all forms of discrimination. My commitment lies in the continuous process of learning, empowering, and engaging individuals to actively participate in Yara´s journey towards establishing a workplace diverse, equitable and inclusive. Within our organization, we are committed to prioritize the elevation of Black talents at all levels, with a specific emphasis on senior leadership positions through initiatives like our Black Talents Program and the Black Leader Development Program. However, I also intent to focus on strengthening the talent pipeline. It´s essential to ensure we provide young talents with a pathway to Grow@Yara. This way, I aim to achieve a diverse Americas Leadership team that accurately reflects the various shades of color and racial diversity present in the population of the region we operate in. Reaching out with a kind word or gesture of welcome and acceptance can mean so much and costs so little.

Did you know we have more than 160 words to define #Culture?   For the celebration of Black History Month - UK, Baker Hughes #BEN #ERG organized an amazing session on #Cultural #Competence and #Creating an #Inclusive #Workplace. It was led by Dr Nike Folayan MBE (PhD, CEng., FIET) the Co founder of Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK) , some themes captured where: - #Building a qualitative and quantitative baseline of the workplace. - #Creating of safe spaces in which staff can air all their concerns. - Further #education about micro-aggression and micro incivilities. - #Creating a framework for equitable progression. - #Diversifying the supply chain by embedding social value into contracts and inclusive leadership.   It was a moment of of discovery, but also of open discussion, advice accompanied by a serene atmosphere and a few laughs (actually a lot of them 😂 ); for the lucky ones who were also in presence in our office in Hammersmith, with snacks (Damola Adewunmi (ACIPD), Amaka Mbanugo, Efomo Ogwu MBA, FCA, Francesco Ntiba, Seyi Bakare, Tomilola Famuboni, Lorenzo Oggero, Sonya Batchelor, Michael Nnochiri, Sara Christopher, Amaka Mbanugo - good fortune all to others 😪 ) . Our leaders also shared their experiences of working with cultural differences, a special thanks to Kim Sabate , one of our #DEI Leaders, who by sharing her experience made me too, (who am part of so many Ethnic boxes as mixed, but belong to none), feel part of a #multicultural family.   Being culturally different may not be cool when we are young and want to belong, but once you discover that those differences (skin color, accent, gestures, voice, hair etc) make you - You; then you will understand and release your full potential, making yourself proud of who you are! 😎   Happy to be part of a company where difference is an added value!   #BakerHughes #WeAreBakerhughes #Inclusion #Multicultural #Diversity

Something unexpected happened when I asked a question. Here's what happened. I shared this story last year during Pride Month, and I think it is important to share it again. It had been an amazing week. The Solar Energy Industries Association Board of Directors was in town for our quarterly board meeting, and I had spent days with the most influential business leaders in the #solar and #storage industry, as well as Administration officials at the highest levels, and numerous members of US Congress. Something really cool happened after. I was finishing up a meeting with several industry CEOs. As I was saying goodbye to one, I noticed his lapel pin – an American flag intertwined with a rainbow flag. I commented on how much I liked it and he took it off, told me he bought lots of them just for this purpose, and handed it to me. I have been proudly wearing it and will continue to do so. Why do I share this story? I visited this CEO at his headquarters in Michigan. We had a thoughtful discussion of the solar supply chain, an engaging tour of manufacturing facilities, and then….quite unexpectedly….an honest and open discussion about being leaders and managing issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and an inclusive workplace. We share a passion for ensuring that our colleagues feel welcomed in every space they show up in, however they show up. What a gift that conversation was. To hear another’s experience and share my own. To identify an advocate for equity and inclusion. Honoring #pridemonth (and Pride 365 days) happens in so many different ways.
