Awesome session on Skills Based Hiring and Inclusive Hiring with SIM Seattle Chapter and Year Up last night in Fremont at FREMONT MISCHIEF INC with John Nelson Matt Rossmeissl Saben Emmons and Mj Jensen. Key Takeaways from the Panel: 1) Mentorship, mentorship, mentorship: Keola Ohumukini said it best in that the opportunity to be a mentor is a true privilege and mentoring others (especially those who have less advantage) is important for all of us. 2) Generational Change: The power of Year Up really rests with giving students a unique opportunity to experience tech or a more professional career versus retail or other hourly jobs that are accessible without a college degree. When a Year Up student is able to earn that higher income, higher skill job/career with benefits, we are changing the arc of their career and life and likely their parents and their children as well. Investing in and volunteering with Year Up is a tremendous opportunity. 3) Hands-on Education in IT: Both Mj Jensen & Saben Emmons said that they would have loved a program like Year Up to help break into the tech industry. Much of tech is learned on the job with the right attitude and life skills. Both MJ and Saben have built very successful careers with Expedia Group, Amazon, Bezos Academy and City of Kirkland without a college degree. 4) Get more than you give: Inevitably, Year Up interns are able to push the hiring organizations forward through exposure to diversity of thought, youth, and challenging the status quo. If anyone is interested in hosting a Year Up interns or volunteering with Year Up, please contact Carmen M. or Lisa Soboslai or Nina Gerber. Thank you John Nelson Keola Ohumukini and SIM Seattle Chapter for hosting!

Happy Intern Day! In the course of the past two months, it has been fun and interesting to work with and get to know some of our interns. For many (maybe all?) this is their first fully in-person job experience. When I contrast our intern program this summer with my son's internship with Coke during the pandemic, it's like night and day. Both positive experiences, but very different. I know there is still a lot of discussion around #returntooffice and in our business that discussion usually focuses a lot on investment in office buildings. I wonder the long-term impact on young careers of in-person vs. work from anywhere vs. hybrid internships and early work experience.
Happy National Intern Day! We want to honor our interns that have been working with us this summer. We are grateful for all of their hard work and dedication throughout these past two months. Are you a procrastinator? I am sure we have all procrastinated - just that some of us procrastinate more often than others. So, what causes procrastination? Laziness? Not really. In fact, procrastination is the result of a mechanism that your body is trying to protect you from feeling uncomfortable. It is triggered when you perceive a task too difficult or painful to work on. To overcome procrastination, one effective way is to break down the tasks into smaller sub-tasks. Try to handle one small task at a time, and that would make you feel more motivated to start your work. P.S. Thank you Jovi S F YAN, Angela Man and Ebbie Ng for having me to deliver a training on time management to the summer interns at Hong Kong Jockey Club. It is a delight meeting with these Gen Z young talents!
