Well done to ANZPAC Member ALDI Stores Australia who has just released its ‘Making Sustainability Affordable’ Progress report for 2023. ALDI is committed to reducing plastic wherever possible across its product packaging range. In 2019, the supermarket committed to reduce plastic packaging by 25% by the end of 2025. ANZPAC Members work together towards four 2025 Regional Targets, with the elimination of unnecessary and problematic packaging through redesign and innovation being the first target of the Pact. Here are some innovative ways ALDI has reduced unnecessary plastic packaging: - ALDI’s flow-wrap mince packaging trial produced a 70% reduction in plastic packaging for it’s Jindurra Station mince. This packaging was a Finalist for the 2023 Design Innovation of the Year Award by the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) of Packaging, - The supermarket’s everyday range of standard batteries are now packaged in paper instead of plastic, saving approximately 17 tonnes of plastic waste per year, - Historically, ALDI has never provided single-use plastic carrier bags in any of its Australian stores. This decision has stopped an estimated 9.4 billion plastic bags from entering the market, - Following collaboration with its suppliers, ALDI’s Styrofoam noodle cup packaging will start to be phased out by late-2023, with production of new paper-based cups already underway. ALDI has already achieved a remarkable 12.2% reduction in plastic packaging across their exclusive brands since 2019, preventing an additional 5,500 tonnes of plastic from circulation each year. Joint survey by Eco-Business and Reloop. https://lnkd.in/gbD5yjqs: New scheme to up plastic recycling rates in Hong Kong gets broad support, but consumers want higher rebates #recycling #drs Imo, the proposed HK$0.10 (or US$0.01) refund per container might appear to be low, especially when compared with successful deposit-refund schemes in Europe. However, I would like to provide an alternative perspective - that the policy might have a different target audience. The target audience could possibly not be the young professionals (between ages 25 to 34) interviewed in this study, but the informal recyclers - waste pickers and cleaners. Like in most Asian cities, the informal recyclers play a critical role in the entire recycling logistics chain. They often rely on recycling as a primary or supplementary income, collecting mainly aluminium cans and cardboard. Plastic bottles are often not collected as the value is too low. The street recycling price of a plastic bottle is only around HK$0.01-0.02. The proposed refund of HK$0.10 will increase the street value by 4-5 times, making the collection of plastic bottles equally as profitable as aluminium cans. This model was piloted (with incentive of HK$0.05) in Hong Kong in 2021 with some success. The pilot collected over 110 tons of bottles per month, and this was far more effective than the pilot on reverse vending machines.

Presidents Biden and Xi Jinping sit down today. Important stuff. In advance, China and the United States yesterday announced an agreement to displace fossil fuels by ramping up renewable energy sources…..wind, solar, geothermal and others. This agreementcomes two weeks before representatives from nearly 200 countries converge in Dubai as part of the United Nations climate talks known as COP28. It’s a big deal….and a sign that the entire world is not just recognizing Climate Change but doing their part to address it. If 200 countries can act, what can we do? Retailers….it’s time to lead…by doing your part. It’s time to STOP using single-use paper and plastic bags. No more free bags. No more selling bags for a nominal nickel or dime. JUST STOP. Replace them with reusable shopping bags. Make them easier to purchase. Place them at the register or self-check-out. Make cashiers offer them for purchase to each customer. Retailer, it’s in your selfish best interest. Paper and plastic bags are a store’s largest supply expense BY FAR. Save money by NOT giving away those bags. We can help with the transition. A Joey Pouch on your shopping cart makes reusables easy to use. Shoppers in our survey call the Pouch “Brilliant”. (TheJoeyPouch.com) Retailer, are you ready to make a difference? We are. Let’s talk. #supermarket #sustainability #plasticbag #paperbag #walmart #kroger #CVS #target #albertsons #aldi #lidl #wholefoodsmarket #wholefoods #sprouts #stopandshop #hannigans #market32 #wegmans #giant #gianteagle #publix no excuse for this......
