6 months together, how time flies 💘* It has been 6 months since I was incredibly fortunate to be awarded the Employee Owner of the Year award at the annual eoa conference. It’s also just about three years since I was - again - incredibly fortunate to become an Employee Trustee at Stephens Scown 💕 Both milestones have me in a reflective mood. We’re currently running an election to appoint five new Employee Trustees as the terms of five of our current Employee Trustees end (Dave Robbins, Lexie Williams, Anthony Booth, Kia Pearson and myself). Those of us exiting these roles have given a lot and contributed a lot in that time, for the benefit of our fellow employee-owners and for our business. But I know that by handing over to colleagues new to the positions we will be adding new experience and perspective, not losing it. And, in our time we have raised the bar of what is expected from a Trustee at Stephens Scown – and when we step away the bar will be set to that level as a minimum, and then taken higher yet again by the new group, as we continually evolve our Employee Ownership. Before we part though, there is still the little-old task of delivering an outstanding EO Day event, so we all get to finish our time as Trustees with a bang! 🤯 It has been a pleasure to be of service. #EmployeeOwnership #EmployeeEngagement #Culture *I'm a Film graduate, not that you could tell from this (purposefully) simple piece, and I have never finished a short film with 'Fin' before...until now. But, after the roller-coaster of these 31 seconds, I thought it needed a punchy and charming and romantic ending.

I had the pleasure of joining miniEnterprize as a guest panelist. This is the largest student-run business conference in Vancouver, with 250+ high school students meeting at The University of British Columbia campus to compete in a business case competition. Timothy Cuffe, Aneesh Varshney and I sat down with students to discuss our careers at length. I went through my time at high school, how I made it through university, my first job, and the decisions that led me to where I am now. For students, new grads or anyone reading this plotting where they'll go next, the below is a summary of the advice the other panelists and I gave on how to get the most out of your next few years. The takeaways. Meet all sorts of leaders. Don't latch on to the 'get a mentor' advice that people give. The latter relies on you finding one person to provide you with the answers, limiting you to only their experience, values and perspectives. Network. There's a right strategy to this that gets results. First it to be purposeful about your interactions with others. Read up on their experience, list out thoughtful questions that won't lead to one-word answers, and explain why you wanted to meet with them and not someone else. Next is repetition. Find people that interest you and ask them for their time. Do this time and again. Do you want to leave an impression on a few people a month, or hundreds? Fail. Ask yourself why. Then work on it for next time. The first two presentations I led as a first-year student saw me sweating nervously, stuttering, or completely blanking on the materials. I hated it, the embarrassment I felt wasn't fun. But this led me to want to improve, so that year I enrolled in weekly public speaking classes. Today I can run through presentations fairly easily. Be uncomfortable. Value discipline as the gateway to improvement. Train yourself to do things you don't particularly like but are worth it in the long-run. For me, this meant getting up early, daily exercise and almost completely cutting out junk foods. That's it. Now this is certainly nothing new, but I hope it helps people who maybe haven't received advice like this before. Thank you to Yasmin Kahkesh for inviting me.
