🌻 👩🌾 The current system of food production in #Ukraine is based on large-scale monoculture production and centralised logistics. That makes it fragile and highly vulnerable to external threats. This situation has been partly caused by international financial institutions allowing big agribusiness and exports to have free rein, which has had severe environmental and social impacts and held back local economic development. In her insightful piece for the Bretton Woods Project, CEE Bankwatch Network’s Vladlena Martsynkevych argues that new investments must be used in a strategic way to transform Ukraine’s agricultural and food sector. 🇪🇺🇲🇩 It's official: More Moldovan plums, grapes and other agricultural products can come to European markets tariff-free. By facilitating market access for these key Moldovan agricultural products, the EU is helping Moldova to redirect affected trade. This will directly help Moldovan producers, supporting the country's economic resilience in current difficult circumstances. Almost all Moldovan products can now enter the EU tariff-free under the EU-Moldova Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA). This is a demonstration of EU's solidarity designed to help Moldova deal with the loss of its main markets and transit hubs for these key agricultural products resulting from Russia's unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine. #StandWithMoldova

[#IG #Ethiopia] How can the development of a geographical indication system support the agri-food sector in Ethiopia? 📍 ➡ Ethiopia is home to various agricultural products whose reputation is linked to their geographical origin such as coffee, honey, sesame or teff. Geographical Indications (GIs) appear therefore to be very relevant for Ethiopia, especially in the agri-food sector. 💡 The project “Geographical indications for origin-linked products in Ethiopia” (GOPE) was launched on May 24th, 2023. This three-year project is financed by the GI Support Fund (Facilité IG) and aims to elaborate a national legal framework for GIs in collaboration with national authorities, as well as to implement a pilot GI in the Ethiopian coffee value chain. This pilot GI is meant to build capacity of the relevant stakeholder on all the aspects of a GI process through a concrete pilot case. Coffee was elected to be the pilot GI for being one of the value chains with high potential. 📊 ☕ Not only is Ethiopia the historical cradle of coffee, but it is also a producer of well-known premium quality #coffee. Ethiopia is the leading producer in Africa, and the 3rd largest producer of #Arabica worldwide after Brazil and Colombia. It is also possesses the largest highland area suitable for Arabica production and, hence has the potential to be a leading producer in both quality and quantity. 🎯 🤝 The project is carried out jointly by the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority (EIPA), the Ethiopian coffee Authority (ECTA), Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) and Jimma University College of Agriculture (JUCAVM), with technical assistance of CIRAD. ✅ This is the 5th projects supported by the GI Support Fund, a € 6,5 million program funded by AFD - Agence Française de Développement and implemented by CIRAD to provide technical and financial support for the development of GIs in #Africa and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. 👉 Want to know more about the implementation of geographical indication systems? KSE Agrocenter released the report Cooperation between Ukraine and African countries in agriculture: West Africa. 📄🌍 The report analyzes the development of agri-food systems in the most populated countries of West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire), state support for agriculture in the region, as well as the prospects for partnership between these countries and Ukraine in the agricultural sector.
