Lipoprotein(a), also known as Lp(a) or "LP little a", is a fatty particle that's similar to LDL-C ("bad cholesterol") but with an extra protein called apolipoprotein(a) wrapped around it. High levels of Lp(a) are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other conditions. Lp(a) isn't picked up by a standard cholesterol test - levels can range from < 1 mg/dl to >1,000 mg/dl, and are determined primarily by genetics. Do you want to learn more?
