On the cover of JGP's October issue: Epilepsy-associated pathogenic variants in the human voltage-gated sodium channel NaV1.2 exhibit complex dysfunction. Significant deviations from the wild-type channel are presented as volcano plots illustrating biophysical properties color-coded as either gain- (blue symbols) or loss-of-function (red symbols). Black symbols are variants with nonsignificant differences. Many variants have mixed functional effects. Image by Thompson et al. 📢 A new paper is out! 🔊 Prof. José Villalaín has published a new article in "Free Radical Biology and Medicine" Journal determining by molecular dynamics the location and interaction of molecules such as idebenone and mitoquinone against reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a a membrane similar to the inner mitochondrial membrane. 🎙 Imbalance in ROS production and removal, i.e., oxidative stress, plays a fundamental role in neurodegeneration and aging, and antioxidant molecules are aimed to lessen its effects by reducing the formation of ROS. The antioxidant molecules we have studied in this work, which are relatively safe and have negligible side effects upon administration, can accumulate inside membranes and interact, but not in a dramatic way, with lipid molecules. Its ability to localize within the membrane might be responsible in part for its beneficial effects on human health. 📜 More information: https://lnkd.in/dnAgRBXU #moleculardynamics #ROS #oxidativestress
