Why a £3billion pound Sandwich shop gave me a Free Meal? Last Saturday, after volunteering to feed families and children in my community, I drove about 30 miles to another town, still wearing my volunteer shirt. As I walked into a sandwich shop 🥪🥪🥪, the person at the counter recognized me as part of the Gillingham S.T.R.E.E.T Angels, a group dedicated to feeding families and children in the community ensuring no child goes to bed hungry. When I went to pay, he insisted, "No, take it for free." He explained that Pret a Manger, the company he worked for, supports the homeless through food giveaways. Lesson Learned: Corporate Kindness: This experience showed me that even big companies like Pret a Manger are compassionate and actively support their communities. Building Loyalty: Acts of kindness, like providing free meals to volunteers, not only support those in need but also build loyalty and goodwill within the community. It's inspiring to see how businesses can make a positive impact beyond their products or services. What does your brand mean to you? How are you contributing to your community? “You are handsome, intelligent, and doing service for your community.  You’re doing OK.” These are the words I heard from a lovely elderly woman this morning as I delivered meals to her during my weekly Meals on Wheels route. What a thing to hear on a Thursday morning! Early this year I decided it was time to get back to volunteering.  For most of my life I’d regularly volunteered my time.  As a kid I joined my Nana on Friday nights  at the Feeding Ministry at my church.  Then this commitment to service continued through high school, college, and early adulthood.  It wasn’t until I moved to San Francisco in 2013 that volunteering slipped off my radar.  Now 10 years later, and settled in my new home of Buffalo, I felt the pull to get back into some sort of service. While I knew that getting a break from a complete focus on my world would be a bit of fresh air, I under-estimated the joy it would bring me.  These two hours every Thursday morning are quickly becoming the highlight of my week. I shouldn’t be surprised, though.  Research shows us the positive impact of short, warm interactions (with neighbors, the mail carrier, cashiers, etc.) - even suggesting that these moments contribute to a longer, healthier life. I know that there are big problems in this world.  And I know that you want your time and energy to make a positive contribution.  Me too. As you strive to do work that you’re proud of and make an impact on this world, don’t sleep on the opportunities right outside your door.  In addition to making a difference, it might also give you the fuel you need to keep going. #volunteering #buffalo #buffalony #cityofgoodneighbors #mealsonwheels #impact #smallsteps #community
