Have you heard about Nestlé Purina PetCare Europe #OceanRestoration Programme? The episodes highlight Purina's efforts in restoring marine biodiversity in Europe together with its partners Oyster Heaven, Sea Ranger Service, Urchinomics, and SeaForester. They are set in The Netherlands, Norway and the UK. Purina aims to restore 1,500 hectares of marine habitats by 2030 🌊🌱 – the equivalent of nearly 3,700 football pitches! Fish is part of Purina's supply chain because it uses fish by-products, which are parts of fish that are not consumed by humans. Three episodes around these solutions: 1) planting seagrass meadows, a key habitat-forming species, helping with biodiversity and capturing carbon. 2) Reconstructing lost oyster reefs using natural materials: Oysters generate biodiversity, provide a home for a multitude of different species and are natural water filterers, removing pollutants including excess nitrogen which helps improve water quality. 3) removing excess sea urchins, which have overgrazed seaweed 4) exploring the potential of seaweed bio-stimulants (to reduce fertilizers) in regenerative agriculture in the UK following Fera Science Ltd. and a farmer. In 1900, the Limfjords-Eastern Company really got wind in its sails and formed the basis for the fishing and accompanying industry that we know today.💥 In 1986, Vilsund Muslinge Industri A/S was founded and in 2010 the two companies merged to form what we know today as Vilsund Blue A/S, which is a Danish company with roots and base in Nykøbing Mors. I spent years in the coffee industry and it's disheartening how little attention is paid to the origin and impact of our daily cup. While deforestation caused by beef and palm oil is well known, coffee's role in the issue is often overlooked. Technology and legislation may help move the industry in the right direction. Read this 2021 article (updated this year) to get a picture of some of the issues. As consumers, let's do our due diligence on the companies we buy from. Nguyen Coffee Supply is a good example of a company working towards improving awareness and quality of robusta coffee which could help with some of the issues raised in this specific case study in Indonesia. We can use reusable bags, bottles, and containers to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean. 2. Proper Disposal of Plastic Waste: Proper disposal of plastic waste is crucial in reducing the amount of microplastics that end up in the ocean. We should always dispose of plastic waste in the appropriate bin, so it does not end up in the waterways, which eventually makes its way into the ocean. 3. Supporting Sustainable Fishing Practices: Sustainable fishing practices, such as fishing gear modifications, avoiding fishing in sensitive areas, and reducing the amount of by-catch, can prevent plastic from entering the ocean. Supporting sustainable fishing practices put less pressure on marine ecosystems, which helps to keep microplastics out of the ocean.

❌ 🎣 A lack of transparency at sea is leading to illegally and unsustainably caught fish to enter the supply chain. Today - on the International Day against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing - we want to highlight one of the global initiatives working to create a sustainable and transparent fishing future. Last month, we launched the The Nature Conservancy's Tuna Transparency Pledge. This pioneering initiative aims to address the unsustainable fishing practices in the tuna industry by urging major retailers to commit to 100 percent on-the-water monitoring across all industrial fishing vessels within their supply chains by 2027 🐟 🔍 Walmart, Albertsons Companies and Thai Union Group PCL. are among the first signatories of the Tuna Transparency Pledge who will now need to help drive market transformation to guarantee a long-term and sustainable seafood supply.
