A post from one of my classmates at the Climatebase fellowship. I appreciate Robert Blake's commentary on tribal sovereignty and energy independence. While we praise the success stories, I wanted to underscore one concept of tribal sovereignty that we should also take into consideration: a specific right granted to Indigenous Peoples recognized in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) known as Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC). FPIC aligns with indigenous people's universal right to self-determination. FPIC allows Indigenous Peoples to provide or withhold/ withdraw consent, at any point, regarding projects impacting their territories -- such as new fossil fuel, mining and landfill projects. FPIC allows Indigenous Peoples to engage in negotiations to shape the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of projects. Take the historical example of Navajo (Dine) access to safe drinking water. Despite promises made in treaties with the US Government promising electricity and water modernization, the tribe was largely left out of water infrastructure modernization. Moreover, polluting industries contaminated their ground and surface water sources, failing to implement FPIC consultation. It's a dire situation that is still not fully addressed to this day. The future promises the opportunity to do better, and include FPIC consultations in all aspects of the just transition, including not just government incentives to start new green business but also new modernization projects by outside climate tech companies. #freepiorandinformedconsent #fpic #indigenousrights #humanrights #waterrights
One of my favorite parts of this week was learning about native-owned solar from Robert Blake. Robert's the founder and CEO of Solar Bear MN (the only Native American/minority-owned solar company in the state of Minnesota), Executive Director of Native Sun Community Power Development, and tribal citizen of Red Lake Nation. Some amazing insights from Robert's talk to Climatebase Fellows: 💡 "Energy is a human right." While leveraging #tribalsovereignty is critical to the equitable energy transition and decarbonizing the grid, Robert's also passionate about how energy access can address the human health crisis in tribal country. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gM32s4JG. 💡 "We can't build an army to fight the United States government again, but we can take back this land morally, and the time is now." While the Red Lake Nation opposed the construction of fossil fuel pipelines across its land and continues to resist a future of extraction, Robert saw the opportunity for workforce development, positive impact, and further resistance through #renewableenergy. I strongly encourage folks to check out Solar Bear (https://solarbear.earth/) and Native Sun Community Power Development (https://nativesun.org/) to learn more.

Get to know Mid-Hudson Energy Transition: We envision a future based on #energydemocracy, with equitable access to clean and healthy energy resources for all. Our programs help make homes and workplaces more energy efficient, healthier and affordable with clean electricity supply, community-based renewable energy, building retrofits and innovative financing opportunities. We engage and build on the active involvement of communities, and their elected and grassroots leaders, with particular emphasis on low-income, Black, Indigenous, and communities of color that have been disproportionately harmed by the extractive energy economy and continue to experience the effects of climate change first and worst. MHET believes that by taking our energy future into our own hands we will build a just, resilient, stable, and affordable future. This means including everyone as we transition away from fossil energy, making homes and businesses more energy efficient, and creating new forms of cooperative energy ownership and wealth-building.

Dedicated fundraiser with a penchant for connecting people with causes in hopes of leaving the world a better place.
Why is #energyefficiency important? Reducing utility bills has significant economic and environmental impacts: energy bills are especially high for low-income and non-white residents; utilities rank among top expenses for K-12 schools and non-profits; and buildings are responsible for roughly 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions. Big problems that can all be solved through small collective efforts - learn how Southface Institute is driving impact through our 2022 Annual Report.
Today is Energy Efficiency Day, and at Southface, we are powered by our community. Our 2022 Impact Report celebrates our collective efforts to build a resilient future. Thank you to all of our friends, partners, members, and supporters! #energy #community Read the full report: https://bit.ly/46zhgC2

A hopeful note for your green future: we're making headway in combating climate change through municipalities that sign on for greener energy solutions. It's a wholesale approach to transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Happy Earth Day! Earth Day may get a little cooler in the future thanks to the efforts of organizations like Ava Community Energy (an Outfront Client). Ava helps San Francisco's East Bay communities increase their use of wind and solar power and speed the transition to a carbon-free future. It's happening, folks! Today I attended the Community Clean Energy Coalition Summit sponsored by the Dept. of energy and the Clean Energy Business Network. (CEBN) The Doe recognizes that the combination of demographics, their hiring advancement policies, and lack of awareness of career opportunities across segments f the population may place the Clean Energy initiative at risk of not having a skilled, productive, and diverse workforce. Industry understands that a diverse and inclusive workforce produces better results. The DOE seems to be making positive moves to engage sources across communities that are outside the traditional suspects to address this issue. Clean Energy for Communities is designed to incentivize entrepreneurs to re-engage innovation and reassert leadership in the energy marketplace by encouraging coalition formations and actions within and across communities by investments. We ae interested in partnering with Georgia based CBOs interested to explore ways to tap into funding available through the DOE and CEBN. King and Lynn Abramson, President Clean Energy Business Network
