Last week, the BBC helpfully told us there had been an "increase" in abortions happening in Northern Ireland. And last weekend, a few thousand anti-abortion people had a march in Dublin to complain about "too many" abortions happening in Ireland. This framing is, well, stupid. Counting abortions is also, in our opinion, stupid. Here's the thing. There is not a "right" or "wrong" number of abortions. What there are is the number of abortions that people need and want, vs the number of abortions that people actually get. This is the only number we should be focused on - the number of abortions not had because of obstacles standing in the way of people who want abortions, and the abortions they want. Those obstacles can include lack of providers, lack of funds, being over arbitrarily set time limits on when someone can have an abortion, lack of childcare, being undocumented or an international student, and lack of accessible clinics. What we find especially rich about the framing in Northern Ireland and Ireland is that when they "count" abortions, they are never counting all of them. The official statistics have only ever counted the numbers of people who have abortions and give their true details at official abortion providers. These numbers have never counted the numbers of people who order abortion pills from places like Women help Women and Women on Web, or the people who travel abroad either to countries that don't count international patients or who give a fake address at the clinic. People from Ireland are still travelling for abortion care which to us means there are not enough abortions happening in Ireland, not too few. And in Northern Ireland the "increased" numbers are about exactly what was predicted by activist group Alliance for Choice, who know more than anyone about the reality of abortion in Northern Ireland. SAFE is working with the activists who are helping these people - the ones who often are not counted, and the ones most likely to not get the abortions they want or need. https://lnkd.in/eN9W9fiV
