Nonprofit Highlight: The Other Side Academy (TOSA) The Other Side Academy (TOSA) is a place where individuals who have a past full of addictions, drugs, crime, and incarceration and who are ready to make a change in their lives can go and join a transformational program. TOSA doesn't use licensed therapists, but rather uses people who themselves have a similar background to coach new entrants through the process of turning their life around. The program is free and participants can stay as long as they need as long as they are committed to staying with the program. This model is based on Delancey Street in California and both programs have seen a lot of success. TOSA supports its main operations with business activities that are described as vocational training programs. This is because the employees of each business line are the participants in TOSA's programs. One of the most visible examples is The Other Side Movers, a moving company that has received several accolades. TOSA also has thrift stores and other operations that help give valuable work experience to the participants in the program. TOSA has a 94% and 4-star rating on Charity Navigator for its accountability and finance. The Organization has not received any ratings or awards from Candid by Guidestar, Charity Watch, or Great Nonprofits. This makes sense to me in that it is more focused on becoming self-sufficient with its business operations instead of asking the general public for donations. The latest Form 990 (2021) shows that the Organization brought in $13.6M in 2021. Of this, $7.2M came from its various business operations and about $6.3M were donations. About $2.6M of those donations were in-kind (non-cash) contributions. About 90% of TOSA's expenses were spent its programs. Even taking out the in-kind donations only lowers that to 87% of expenses. Tanner's first episode of its Tanner Impact podcast covered TOSA. You can listen to that on Spotify or here: https://lnkd.in/g3p63iXH As an auditor at Tanner LLC I've had the chance to work with a lot of nonprofits. I am passionate about the world of charities, nonprofits, and philanthropy. #nonprofit #charity

I have been wanting to share this for quite some time, with my followers here on LinkedIn. As I've gotten older and debatably, wiser:), I look more & more for meaningful ways to give back to my community. Partnering with business & social relationships, to do good...I shared an idea over breakfast late last year, with my good friend, Eric Perry. We both had experiences attending various $100 Dinners, whereby, a bunch of local business owners would gather at a specific restaurant, in hopes of getting the most attendees possible, charging them $100 each, and bestow the mighty proceeds with 2 or 3 deserving servers. Yes, it does feel great to reward hard working and perhaps, financially struggling service staff with a potentially life changing gratuity. I just felt, we could do something better. Something more impactful to the community, in addition to the service staff. I said Eric, what do you think about partnering up, starting January 2024, and host a $100 Dinner, whereby, we focus on the following: 1. Find a local family owned restaurant 2. choose a day of the week where business might be slower than the weekends 3. Ask them to staff us with their most deserving wait staff (Ones on hard times, maybe a single parent struggling to make ends meet and just needs a big time lift) 4. My favorite aspect (and where we are different), each month we select a different 501C3 Charity to raise and award the proceeds to. Each month we have grown organically, and the enthusiasm is contageous. Here's a pic from last night's Charity Dinner (in the comments) where we raised $3,600.00, awarding $1,800 to the 2 servers who took care of us, and $1,800.00 to this month's charity...The Million Dollar Teacher Project https://mdtproject.org/. If you haven't attended one, we would love to have you join us. This goes out to everyone (not just business owners). Let me know if you'd like info on the dinner for July.

Very pleased Macc and JCI Manchester are working together on this event in September to explore opportunities for young people to look at trustee roles. I always encourage people who are looking to learn about how organisations (in any sector) really work to consider being a trustee - it's a great way to gain a lot of insight and experience while also helping out a local community or a cause. #trustees #charities #manchester #vcse https://lnkd.in/esHEHdKG

The5 with Eric Moraczewski welcomes Kyle Ogden, President & CEO of The Thanks-Giving Foundation. Kyle joins The5 to talk about Building a Profoundly #Caring Community. Something most, if not all, nonprofits are focused on but maybe aren't always aware of. Kyle talks about being intentional with gratitude and caring, as well as the Foundation's five key functions of Building a Profoundly Caring Community. Kyle became the President and CEO of The Thanks-Giving Foundation because he wanted to do something important in the bigger civic context, and build something sustainable for the citizens of Dallas. The Thanks-Giving Foundation is a platform that can influence the future of the community, and he believes his contribution of time, effort and resources can make a real difference as an accelerant of positive change. The physical and programmatic enhancements made are being noticed, and he is proud that the vision will deliver a place of importance within the nonprofit landscape. Before joining The Thanks-Giving Foundation, Kyle was the Chairman, President and CEO of Carroll Company. Kyle received a Bachelor of Business Administrations degree in honors business and a Master of Business Administration degree in accounting and finance from the University of Texas at Austin, and went on to earn his CPA license. In his spare time, he enjoy golf, baseball and travel. He and his wife have four adult children. The5 is a celebration of the work being done by nonprofit professionals, highlighting valuable tips and methods that nonprofits should be utilizing. The5 is aptly named as NMBL Strategies celebrates our 5 year anniversary. Host Eric Moraczewski leads guests on a journey of topics that are of deep importance to the guest and discusses how nonprofits and nonprofit leaders can benefit from the experience and expertise. #nonprofit #nonprofits #nonprofitorganization #nonprofitfoundation #nonprofitlife #nonprofitorganizations #nonprofitmanagement #nonprofitsuccess #nonprofitleaders #nonprofitgrowth #gratitude #intentionality

Thinking of starting a #501c3 nonprofit? Consider your #responses to these #key questions before moving forward: 1. What #need do I want to see met? 2. Who else is already doing this work? 3. Why is a new #nonprofit necessary/important? 4. Why am I the right person to undertake this? What passion, skills, #experience and aptitude do I bring to a new organization? 5. What do I hope to gain from establishing the nonprofit (employment, income, feeling of accomplishment, fulfillment of dream)? Share your #vision and your responses to these questions with three people who know you well and will give you #honest feedback. If all three give you the green light, then move forward. If one or more people do not, seriously consider the reasons for their reluctance before undertaking the new #venture. We love to help social #entrepreneurs get started on the right path but most of the time a #new #nonprofit is not the best path forward. Do your #homework. Spend some time on these key questions and if you are ready to proceed, we are here to help. #communitydevelopmentprofessionals #CDP #getorganizedgetfunded
