On February 7, 2024, Philippine space research team OrbitX is conducting a crucial performance test at the Department of Science and Technology - Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC). This test, dubbed the "Splash Me Baby," marks a significant milestone in the development of OrbitX's Tamaraw engine, the heart of their future launch vehicles. A. What is the test all about? The "Splash Me Baby" will assess the performance of the initial machined designs of Tamaraw's liquid rocket injector. An injector is a critical component responsible for precisely mixing and atomizing propellants (fuel and oxidizer) inside the engine's combustion chamber, enabling efficient burning and thrust generation. B. Why is this test important? This test is a major step forward for Philippine space ambitions. A successful outcome signifies: * Validation of the injector design: The test data will confirm if the injector design meets the engine's performance requirements, paving the way for further development. * Boost for local manufacturing: The test utilizes locally-machined parts, showcasing the Philippines' growing capability in aerospace manufacturing. * Progress towards Filipino commercial launch vehicle: This test brings OrbitX closer to achieving their goal of developing and launching a Filipino-made renewable liquid space vehicle. ER: The benefits of access to the space laboratory environment aren’t limited to biological sciences.Manufacturing semiconductors and other materials in the cold vacuum of space reduces thermal noise (of particular benefit for sensitive electronics and quantum computing components), improves material quality, allows for more pure crystal formation and uniform alloying in metals, enhances superconductivity in some materials, and may lead to the development of completely new materials with unique structures and properties. In-orbit manufacturing not only directly benefits the Earth but makes space exploration more sustainable. Using raw materials sourced from space or recycling the orbital debris already in space reduces the need to launch all materials and components from Earth, reducing cost and environmental impact. In-orbit manufacturing can enable the repair and upgrade of existing satellites and other spacecraft, extending their operational life and reducing the need. Rocket Lab Launches 40th Electron Mission, Successfully Flies Reused Engine Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (Nasdaq: RKLB) (“Rocket Lab” or “the Company”), a leading launch and space systems company, today successfully launched a dedicated Electron mission for Capella Space (Capella). The mission demonstrated several significant milestones for Rocket Lab’s reusability program, including an ocean splashdown of the Electron rocket’s first stage and the successful flight of a previously flown Rutherford engine. The mission was also Rocket Lab’s 40th Electron launch since the Company began launches in 2017, further cementing Electron’s position as the leading commercial small launch vehicle globally. The ‘We Love The Nightlife’ mission lifted off on August 24th at 11:45 am NZST from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand’s Mahia Peninsula, deploying Capella’s next-generation Acadia satellite for its synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellation to a 640km circular low Earth orbit.
