As one progresses in corporate career, roles are expected to evolve to solve higher complexity and greater ambiguity. Each level as it goes higher has its role level guidelines. A simple and powerful way to define the role expectations is as below. ▶Entry Level : The ‘what’ is defined, the ‘how’ is defined. ▶Entry Level+: The ‘what’ is defined, the ‘how’ is not clearly defined. ▶Entry Level++: The ‘what’ is not clearly defined, the ‘how’ is not clearly defined. ▶Entry Level+++: The ‘what’ is not defined, the ‘how’ is not defined. Define new horizons to expand boundaries. 🔈 Anyone within the level demonstrating consistently these traits of competency will become a Top tier. Anyone demonstrating to a good degree, traits of the next level, will be eligible for promotion. Do career ladders exist anymore? 🔵 In the past, career paths would look like a ladder in which you start at an entry level job at a company and work your way up vertically, often becoming a senior leader in the process. 🔵 One of the problems with this model is that it assumed that everyone wants to become a leader. Some people are great technical experts and love what they do. Moving into a leader role is not appealing to them. The good news… ➡️ The career ladder is dead. 🔵 Careers are more like lattices now. Now, it’s much more common for people to make more horizontal moves, spend time in a variety of ‘verticals’ to get more breadth of skills, or even transition among different industries. They really can focus on growing their technical level of expertise. As a result, L&D and career pathing are becoming more complicated and complex. ➡️ One way to provide some structure to learning and career pathing is by using competencies. Competencies should clearly describe the expectations for all roles in terms of the observable behaviours. This structure allows employees to pinpoint their strengths and areas in need of development. Very useful. There are certain thumb rules that are relevant for all times. Me being an Employer, still go by one of my mentors who gave these golden principles long back during my Engineering days, which are relevant even today : - Never try to justify your actions (good or bad). The moment you start justifying, your growth stops. - Be sincere to your work. Never be loyal to it. - What ever you do, do it to satisfy yourself. Not to satisfy your Boss. - See to it that your Boss knows everything you do. Don't allow anybody else to vouch for you. These are some advice i follow even today. It is relevant to both Employers and Employees.
