Did you know that in the aviation industry, less than 20% are female? At ONT, we have four female chiefs showcasing the power of women leadership! Below we are spotlighting Eren & Michelle. What does it mean to be a woman in a male dominated profession? Eren: My field is primarily female-dominated, so I get to work with the best in the business. I’ve learned to embrace being underestimated and to focus on what ONT needs, and not settling until that’s been accomplished. It means a great deal to me that Atif has the confidence in me to lead ONT in this effort. I love that the executive team is made up of a truly diverse group of women and men! Michelle: There have been many times throughout my 25-year career when I have been the only woman at a table… There have also been many times I’ve been asked for coffee or to take notes even when I was the most senior person at the table… But there are a lot more women working in airports now and I’m so excited to see many women in airport construction leadership roles – especially in California! I think a diversity of perspectives in planning, environmental & construction helps us to advance the industry, innovate and create more sustainable practices. What drew you to the aviation industry? Eren: Our CEO introduced me to aviation, after meeting in graduate school at USC. Like he says, once the jet fuel gets in your veins – you never look back. And now that I am here, I don’t plan to! I love aviation, and I love ONT. Michelle: I’m the third generation in my family to work in airports. My grandfather was the sole employee for Western Airlines at Sea-Tac Airport in the early 1950’s & my father used to play on the apron while my grandfather loaded baggage onto airplanes and took tickets while passengers loaded onto the airplane. My father was a police officer at Sea-Tac from the time I was born until 4 months after I started working at Sea-Tac as a receptionist in 1998. I couldn’t play on the apron, but I spent much of my childhood running around the airport terminals and offices. I think airports are magical. There is so much energy & emotion in airport spaces and I truly love impacting the planning and design of passenger spaces. What makes ONT unique in this industry? Eren: The experience! We’re fast and easy, and usually against traffic for the So Cal residents that we serve. We are closer to more of the destinations that people travel to So Cal to experience, without the major traffic that the LA region is known for. ONT is doing some unprecedented things, & I love that our culture fosters a creative approach to working with partners, finding solutions and thinking outside of the box. Michelle: The support of the community is incredible at ONT! I’ve really enjoyed working with local businesses, community groups, tourism and economic development agencies & other local jurisdictions on airport and inland empire issues. The airport is very much a part of the fabric of this community and region.

We often end up using jargons pertaining to business management like team work, collaboration, planning, time management etc...etc... but all of this is well understood when explained through an example which is relatable. We at IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) recently concluded our much awaited, coveted and most sought after people event #IndiGoSuperStar, where all of this was exemplified. What do you do when you are suddenly informed about hosting an event as BIG as this? You get excited? Anxious? Unprepared? Happy?...I now, actually don’t remember the exact set of emotions when Madhulika Chowdhary threw this to me and rest anyways is history. An event, where people from different teams/departments got together to make it one of the best show at IndiGo. Heartfelt thanks to all the leaders for giving me an opportunity to be a part of such a memorable event. Sukhjit S Pasricha for getting into minutest of details inputs, feedback and those barfi for ensuring the required sugar levels are maintained...Summi Sharma for always doing some opportunity creation that one wouldn't even come to know...S Hari for your presence and support. Slade moderated the AAAE Sustainable Culture Change for a More Diverse and Inclusive Aviation Industry. This session provided an overview of moving the aviation industry forward. Industry leaders are looking for ways to attract and retain a more diverse, younger workforce with a focus on underrepresented groups. For diverse and underrepresented future leaders to see themselves in the industry, we, as current practitioners, need to develop and foster the environment that supports inclusivity.
