SEMI today applauded the first award of U.S. CHIPS and Science Act incentives to strengthen the US semiconductor industry ecosystem: The CHIPS and Science Act provides a 25% tax credit for U.S. facilities that produce semiconductors or chipmaking equipment and $52 billion in funding for new or updated semiconductor-related manufacturing programs. The funding includes $39 billion for grants available to semiconductor manufacturers as well as equipment and materials suppliers and $11 billion for federal semiconductor research programs. Rectification:- The remarkable property of Semiconductor Diode!! One of the most fundamental components of Electronics is the Semiconductor diode which is commonly known as the PN junction diode. Individually, when P & N type semiconductors were studied, it has been observed that their behavior resembles the resistor. That means individual P & N type semiconductors can conduct equally in both positive & negative direction & behaves like a linear device. When a P & N type of semiconductor is joined metallurgically, it has been encountered that this combination behaves differently from individual semiconductors. Here, metallurgical joining means, the addition of trivalent impurities into one end & pentavalent impurities into another end of the intrinsic (chemically pure) semiconductor. This metallurgically joined P & N type semiconductor is said to be a PN junction diode. Initially, when the diode operates in an unbiased condition meaning, the diode is working without an external power supply then, the diffusion current will flow till the formation of a depletion region & after that only the drift current flows. For diffusion current majority of charge carriers of the P & N region are responsible & it is measured in mili- Amperes. While drift current flows due to minority carriers, measured in micro- Amperes & it is temperature dependent. When the P of the diode is connected with the positive & N is connected with the negative terminal of the external power supply, the diode is said to be forward-biased. In this bias, the diffusion current dominates the drift current, and the diode works like a closed switch. On the contrary, under reverse bias ; P is connected to the negative & N is connected to the positive of the external power supply, and the diffusion current stops & drift current will flow. And, in this bias, the diode works like an open switch. That means, the diode conducts unequally. It is conducted heavily in forward bias but, poorly or negligibly in reverse bias. Thus, unlike the resistor diode falls under the category of a non-linear device. The property of the conduction of current only in one direction is termed rectification which is a unique property of the PN junction diode. For this reason, the PN junction diode is used as a rectifier in many electric circuits. The invention of the semiconductor diode was one of the major practical developments in the history of semiconductor technology. Also, it was one of the stepping stones to further semiconductors developments to be made.

According to Semiconductor Intelligence, the question of whether the US Chips Act has been successful in increasing investment in semiconductor wafer fabs in the U.S. is being asked. To answer this question, Semiconductor Intelligence provides a table below that showcases major U.S. fab projects announced in recent years. The total near-term investment for these projects amounts to $142 billion. It is worth noting that most of these projects were announced prior to the passage of the Chips Act. However, it is likely that these companies anticipated future U.S. government subsidies, as indicated by the subsidies listed in the table, which are provided by state and local governments. The semiconductor industry is gearing up for a significant expansion in silicon capacity in 2025, with a total of 17 new fabs set to come online, as projected by Knometa Research. This surge in capacity comes as a response to the market slowdown that has extended fab construction timelines out to 2025. Knometa Research anticipates a record volume of 23.1 million 200mm-equivalent wafers to be produced in 2025, signaling a major milestone for the industry. Originally, construction on many fabs was slated to commence in 2022 with operations expected to start in 2024. However, due to the market downturn that began in 2023, the start dates for some fabs had to be postponed to 2025. The Worldwide Semiconductor Equipment Market Statistics (WWSEMS) Report has revealed that billings for semiconductor manufacturing equipment in Q3 fell by 11% year-on-year to $25.6 billion. Additionally, there was a 1% decline in billings compared to the previous quarter. SEMI CEO Ajit Manocha attributed the Q3 2023 dip in equipment billings to softening chip demand. Since 2016, we have been involved in semiconductor design and verification. While much of our work is on-demand, the creation of specialized chips or accelerators from scratch requires a substantial R&D budget. Unlike other industries, the semiconductor sector is a deep-tech field that demands comprehensive support from government policies to financial backing. Unfortunately, it seems that decision-makers often struggle to distinguish the semiconductor industry's unique requirements. To ensure its growth, we must carefully nurture this sector through advocacy and collaboration, emphasizing its long-term benefits, potential for job creation, and technological advancements. It's crucial to work with industry associations and research institutions while staying informed about global trends to develop effective growth strategies.
"Bangladesh currently earns around $5 million annually from the semiconductor industry, mostly by providing integrated circuit (IC) designing services, while high-end services such as fabrication, packaging, assembly, and testing remain untapped by local semiconductor companies. But our achievement is not negligible either. Virtually non-existent two decades ago, the nascent industry has gained traction rapidly in recent years. If the revenue has been able to reach $5 million over such a short period, we can definitely set our sights high and hope for the semiconductor industry"
