What makes a job memorable? Do you have a story to tell? 15 years ago I worked in Selfridges on London’s Oxford Street as the HR Manager. My boss at the time was amazing. In that role, I think I went through the steepest learning curve of my career. ✅ I heard grievances ✅ I conducted disciplinaries ✅ I even defended the company in employment tribunals. Retail is HARD work. Really hard work. What made it easier was that I had someone who believed in me. They saw my potential. They knew that all I needed was someone to teach me how. Yes I messed up. Of course there were times when I dropped the ball But my boss taught me the importance of empathy, building trust in your teams and learning from your mistakes. This is a photo of my gluten free Lola cupcake that I bought in the store. A sweet reminder that took me back to that time. Do you remember having a boss or mentor that believed in you? As many of you know, I believe the purpose of business is for positive change both for their workers, the local community and the environment. This week I want to talk about one of the areas I am most proud of at our retail and restaurant business Flourish Foodhall & Kitchen. Tyrone, Peter & Beth are beautiful human beings and neuro-diverse. They are fabulous workers and we benefit from having them within our business. Our customers love them and give them great reviews and our other workers benefit from having them around. Why is it then that so few businesses give genuine opportunities to people like this? Or expect them to work for lower wages than others. I am sure we can do more and I am keen to learn from others who are doing similar - please let me know of other companies giving space to neurodiversity.
