In nearly every job posting for internal audit staff or senior roles, there is a stated preference for Big4 experience. And why not? The Big4 offers extensive training, opportunities to audit the world’s biggest companies, and a fast-paced work environment. Having staff and senior auditors with this experience increases the likelihood of completing work faster and at a high quality, thereby enhancing internal audit’s reputation. However, Big4 experience alone doesn't ensure internal auditor success. CAEs and hiring managers recruiting high-potential staff and senior auditors should assess candidates for these four traits: 1. Intelligence - includes book smarts (performed well in school, high IQ), emotional intelligence (self-awareness and ability to work well with others), and street smarts (ability to problem-solve and make quick decisions in complex situations) 2. Character - includes integrity (honesty and a strong moral compass), curiosity, and grit (the combination of passion and persistence to achieve a goal) 3. Coachability - having a willingness to learn and proactively seeking feedback in the spirit of continuous improvement 4. Experience - domain expertise carrying-out listed job responsibilities What you'll find is that many successful internal auditors with Big4 experience fair very well across all four of these traits. And in my opinion, this is what makes them successful, not simply where they worked. Internal audit teams that both interview for these desired traits and have a recruiting plan documenting the roles, responsibilities, and past experiences indicative of these traits will be better positioned for successful future hires and to work in a high-performing audit team.
