💡CADRE COLUMN 💡 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗲. As an Airman serving at THE Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy, this role allows me plenty of opportunities to meet students, have great conversations and learn a little bit about people. During some of these conversations, it has been a little surprising and somewhat alarming in the number of times I’ve engaged with folks who have concerns with policies, procedures, or guidance, relatable things. However, there is more to this point, the most concerning aspect during these conversations, is it usually starts with “I”. When did “I” become who WE are? As Airmen, we always value the relationships, engagements, and events we get to be a part of because of one thing, the TEAM! The TEAM is what we are about. The TEAM is what motivates us each day. The TEAM is why I continue to serve. In the last few years, we have slowly faded away from a TEAM dynamic and gravitated to individualism. As SNCOs, we must commit to the fact that individualism must die. We must eradicate it from our force, units, and flights. We should all look to our left and right, even up and down the chain and do what is needed each day for the TEAM. You do not always have to be a TEAM leader…more importantly, be a solid TEAM player. The most fun people have in their careers is when they reflect on a good TEAM, not their individual achievements and accomplishments, but the deeply rooted relationships that were built while being a part of a successful TEAM! To prepare our airmen for Mission Generation Force Elements, each service’s individuality is important to the Joint Force but that’s where the individuality should end. Bottom line, we have airmen with diverse thoughts, capabilities, and air force specialty codes, we can have the most organized, trained, and equipped airmen in the world, but ultimately, we will have mission failure if we are not a TEAM. -CMSgt Rich Brownlee Chief of Operations, AFSNCOA

Thank you to Cathryn Greville for bringing this video to my attention. All credit and thanks to Suzanne Wertheim, Ph.D. for writing and sharing these words below. I like how Suzanne summarises the attention to detail in the video. When is a pilot not a pilot? Apparently when she is giving testimony to a male state senator. In just one sentence, the senator was inappropriate in THREE different ways. And now his name (Gene Dornink) and the video of him being inappropriate are EVERYWHERE. I'll break it down as a linguist and inclusive-language expert. ____ Pilot: "My name is Laurie Haynor and I'm a Minnesota resident and Minneapolis-based pilot for Delta Airlines." State senator: "Then, Miss Haynor, is that correct, so can you tell me what a typical work week looks like for you as a stewardess?" ____ Oof. Three big problems here in one short sentence. I'll start small and work my way up. 1. Stewardess. Nope! We say flight attendant now. Because stewardess is grammatically feminine with that -ess ending, but plenty of flight attendants aren't women. Just like fireman has moved to firefighter, stewardess has moved to flight attendant. 2. Miss. Mayyyybe ok but probably not. In my book I talk about the "respect gap," where women are often called by first name while a male colleague is called Mr. or Dr. or similar. Miss is the lowest respect term we use for female people, and it's often used for girls. I suspect she should have been called Captain Haynor. But if not, Ms. would be more respectful and less girlish. 3. "As a stewardess." Dude! This woman told you literally seconds ago that she is a pilot. This move from pilot to stewardess is a great example of what I named an "unconscious demotion" back in 2015. A person doesn't fit the prototype for a job. So someone meeting them for the first time looks at them and assumes they can't possibly hold that job. Female doctors are assumed to be nurses. Black lawyers are assumed to be criminal defendants. And female pilots are assumed to be flight attendants. It's disrespectful, and exposes biased mental models. This state senator looked at woman, in a pilot's uniform, testifying as a pilot, who said she was a pilot and COULD NOT COMPREHEND SHE WAS A PILOT. I have identical examples involving Black female doctors, in lab coats, doing doctor things, and not recognized as doctors. Embarrassing for him. And frustrating and humiliating for the millions of people who get unconsciously demoted like this at work all the time. I have a whole section of my book devoted to unconscious demotions and barely scratched the surface. So! With just one sentence, you can say things that make you go viral in all the wrong ways. Have people regard you as out of date, as misogynist, as not in touch with reality.

It is apparent and blatantly obvious to those who choose to see clearly that Biden is physically and mentally challenged at this point in his presidency. It is often glossed, deflected and downplayed but it is a serious concern for the party and an obvious point of review for voters. I am an advocate of the premise that all things happen for a reason. My mom used to tell me often that God don't like ugly. We are on the threshold of trying to decide on the lesser of two evils. How on God's green earth did we even end up in this pasture of radicalism and chaos all at the same time. We try to talk through nonsense and describe the unexplainable with words that further fuel the insanity. We can't even call a rock a rock without it being twisted into something it is not or will ever be. You must read between the lines and even that may require special reading glasses. I said all of this to say, America is on the threshold of the most radical transition in its history. Sadly it will be an unavoidable passive train wreck at the very least. It also has the potential to be a catalyst for something even far more dangerous. No episode in the twilight zone can come close to the set and stage now in place. The curtain will close and open on election day in America to the most prolific paradigm shift every experienced. As the Boy Scouts say in their motto: Be Prepared. You must think and reason differently in the future and work under the ideology of expect the unexpected as the new norm. That trend has already been seeded by so many oddities that the fruit is now in season. I pray however that wisdom can find the cornerstones of the people because without it all can and will be lost as we once knew it. My generation is a testimony of change that has reduced the very concepts of humanity and civilized people to something totally unrecognizable. We must take a stance for humanity or we will become subject to the gods of this world and their whimsical agendas. I can assure you that love and genuine concern for all people is not in their language or their platform.

Airfield OPS rule number 14: Quack. (If you know, you know.) Airfield OPS rule number 15: You are only as good as your team. Support your team, build them up and they will return the favor. (For my fellow Judoka-the principle of Jita-Kyoei) Airfield OPS rule number 16: There are those who have had a safety incident, and there are those who haven't had one yet. You have all the power in the world to stay on the "yet" side. Airfield OPS rule number 17: Should one utilize the kitchen, clean up your mess. No one wants to warm up a nice homemade meal after your blue plate special turns into a mini volcano. Keep the science experiment covered up. However should you be so inclined to think "I wonder what would happen if...", find the corresponding Mythbusters episode. Airfield OPS rule number 18: In such times where one does not know what one wants for lunch, remember the golden rule...Whataburger > In and Out.
