A Journey of Continuous Learning As my internship concluded, one of my mentors Disal Haputhanthrie offered guidance: "Maintain a balance of work and life, for this is just one of many exciting stops along your engineering journey." His words ring true as I reflect on all that I've learned. Over the past months, I've undertaken a variety of fascinating projects. I've designed and fabricated vehicle bodies, analyzed complex mechanical systems through reverse engineering, conducted battery tests, and modified battery modules and cooling systems. Each experience helped strengthen my technical skills and understanding of real-world challenges. Endless thanks go to mentors Chanaka Rathnayake Rangana Vidumal pushpamal karunarathna Disal Haputhanthrie Prasitha Sathsara Madura Herath Indunil Dhanushka for steering me expertly through challenges with patience and support. When I hit the occasional roadblock, their encouragement pushed me to learn from mistakes and give the next problem an even stronger try. It's because of them that I now truly see how many undiscovered areas remain in this creative field. My time at Vega Innovations revealed engineering's depths hold way more than initially met the eye. What once seemed shallow is a vast, intricate domain left to explore. I feel fortunate for the knowledge and confidence gained to do just that. As one chapter closes, I feel energized to start the next. 🎓 Excited to share that I've just completed my internship at Greaves Cotton Limited in the R&D department! During my internship, I had the opportunity to work on a project titled "Engine Performance and Vehicle Emission Assessment with Bosch FIP and SIPL FIP." I delved into various aspects of engine testing, exploring different parameters that impact engine performance and emission levels. Some of the key parameters included: Engine speed (RPM) Load conditions (percentage load) Fuel injection pressure (bar) Air-fuel ratio Injection timing (degrees before top dead center) Ambient temperature (°C) Engine oil temperature (°C) Exhaust gas temperature (°C) Coolant temperature (°C) 📈 It was fascinating to witness how each parameter influenced engine performance and emissions. Understanding these factors is crucial for optimizing engine efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Trainees regularly organise projects together with trainees from our partner companies. This was also the case at the end of last year. Apprentices built a system that will later be used at training courses and trade fairs. The system has a robot arm that picks up an unsprayed pencil and places it on a conveyor belt. On this conveyor belt, the pencil is transported to a sharpener and sharpened. At the end, the robot picks up the pencil again and hands it to a person. An important part of the project was the design. This involved developing parts and assemblies for the project, which can then be manufactured. The time for the design was limited to 9 weeks. A lot had to be designed during this time. Firstly, a magazine was needed to store the unsprayed pencils and from where the robot arm could pick them up. Then they had to make sure that the conveyor belt was attached and design a clamping device that clamps the pencil so that it can be sharpened. One of the main events of the last Industry Day was the Industrial Immersion Excellence Awards for the best summer internship projects of Skoltech students in hi-tech companies. And we'll tell you about each of the winners. 🏆   Let's start with the story of the MSc student in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, Diana Roshka. Her internship project was about the influence of recycling of polymer composite materials on their physical and mechanical characteristics.   "I had a desire to investigate the effect of recycling composite materials on their mechanical properties. To find the most suitable plant, I began to study the composite materials market. As a result, I managed to have an internship in a company within the Composites Division of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom in Chelyabinsk, producing carbon fibers and composite materials. In addition, the topic of my research turned out to be close to the company’s profile, which is studying the possibilities of recycling its products," said Diana.    "During the internship, I learned about the nuances of composite production. The plant provided me with materials for work: carbon fibers before and after recycling (annealing), from which I made composite samples and tested them on an electromechanical testing machine to determine the main mechanical characteristics of the material.    As a result, it was proved that composites can be recycled and, despite some deterioration in their mechanical properties after recycling, they are suitable for the production of a wide range of products in various industries."   Diana noted that the work she has done opens up opportunities for recycling used composites and their "second life" instead of the common burial of these materials nowadays.

Hard Hat on, Knowledge Unlocked: My SIWES Orientation Debrief Excited to announce that my department at Obafemi Awolowo University (a prestigious institution for those who may not know 😊) recently held an orientation for our SIWES 1 program! For those unfamiliar with these acronyms: 📌SIWES: Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme - a program designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience for students in science and technology fields. It's essentially an internship program overseen by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). 📌SWEP: Students Work Experience Program - a similar program, but often conducted on-campus and serving as a stepping stone to SIWES. I'll delve deeper into SWEP in my next post! The SIWES orientation proved incredibly insightful. Huge shoutout to the ITF for allowing science and technology students to participate! This program provides invaluable exposure to the real-world industry, preparing us to function effectively after graduation and potentially land jobs with the companies we intern for. Here are a few key takeaways I'm eager to put into practice: 📍Conquering the Logbook: I finally get my hands on the infamous logbook! (For those unfamiliar, it's a record of daily activities during the internship). While there are funny stories about students filling it with mundane tasks, mine will be a testament to my dedication. I'm here to learn, grow, and become a valuable asset to the company. 📍Bridging the Gap: This concept truly resonated with me, having already experienced it during my SWEP in Part 2. SIWES takes it a step further, allowing us to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. 📍Setting the Standard: As a Quantity Surveying student with a passion for construction, I'm confident I can portray excellence during my internship. My goal is to pave the way for future students by demonstrating the value a strong work ethic and eagerness to learn can bring. Thanks for reading! Are you an Early Bird? My Master's internship UCAL Ltd. wasn't just my first job, it was a transformative launchpad into the exciting, (and sometimes very demanding!) world of manufacturing. Waking up at 4:45 AM (Monday to Saturday) for the 6:00 AM shift with my cycling buddy, Padmanaban (Paddu) was an adventure in itself. His pre-dawn pep talks and shared bike rides kept my energy high, even when the rooster crowed a little too early. Those early days were filled with enthusiastic learning. I dove headfirst into engineering drawings, eager to contribute. However, a few initial mistakes on my individual tasks – a crucial dimension missed here, a minor detail overlooked there – had a real impact on the manufacturing process. Seeing the consequences firsthand wasn't just humbling, it was a pivotal moment. It ignited a spark of curiosity within me, revealing the intricate dance between design and production. Those errors, instead of discouraging me, fueled a desire to understand the process better. This experience, with all its challenges and triumphs, was a turning point in my career trajectory. Sure, there were early mornings and learning curves, but the dedicated team UCAL Ltd. fostered an environment of growth. From my mistakes, I learned the importance of meticulousness and attention to detail. Perhaps most importantly, I discovered a passion for research in the field of design for manufacturability.
