the mighty C-17 Globemaster III! This behemoth of the skies is indeed a marvel of modern cargo aircraft engineering. Developed in the 1980s by McDonnell Douglas (later acquired by Boeing), the C-17 was designed to replace the aging Lockheed C-141 Starlifter and fulfill some of the duties of the even larger C-5 Galaxy. It entered service with the U.S. Air Force in 1993 and has since become a mainstay of American military airlift operations around the world. The C-17 Globemaster III is a testament to engineering ingenuity and its contributions to military and humanitarian efforts are undeniable. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology

Fifty-five years ago on 23 August, North Vietnamese forces took advantage of a week of miserable weather to launch an all-out ground assault against the small U.S. Special Forces camp at Duc Lap in western II Corps, just inside the Republic of Vietnam/Cambodian border. Part of the third phase of the Tet Offensive designed in part to deal a "crushing blow" to Da Nang, suddenly clear skies over Duc Lap enabled U.S. air forces to pummel enemy positions. The Air Force alone flew 314 tactical air and ARC LIGHT sorties. AC-47 Spooky gunships remained overhead all four nights of the attack, giving North Vietnamese forces no respite. In a particularly auspicious performance, USAF Forward Air Controllers guided tactical air, provided visual reconnaissance, and served as a radio relay platform. At dusk on 26 August, battalion-sized reinforcement by Allied troops effectively ended the siege. Enemy forces withdrew on 27 August after suffering more than 700 killed. Allied forces suffered 114 killed in action, and lost four AH-1G and two UH-1 Huey “Slick” helicopters, and one F-100. After a series of subsequent defeats, exactly one month later the Third Offensive ended. Opposed by its Chinese sponsors, the offensive resulted in substantial losses for the north with no ground gained. General Creighton Abrams, commander of Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, attributed airpower's success to the creation of MACV's Single Manager for Air several months before, which allowed U.S. forces to make "tremendous shifts of power...with no long warning to the enemy." The battle also confirmed the importance of AC-47 aircraft, in terms of both military application and the psychological effect it had on both enemy and allied ground forces.
