Most Boomers and Gen X learnt on the job. So can Millennials and Gen Z! Hiring for individual contributor roles should not be so tedious and demanding that the candidate loses interest halfway and accepts another offer where the hiring team was quick in scheduling interviews, identifying strengths, valuing transferable skills, and making timely decisions. Yes, there are multiple statistics on how a bad hire can negatively impact the team. But what about the impact on the team when hiring isn't done within a reasonable timeframe? Prolonged vacancies strain the existing team, ultimately culminating in higher attrition rate. You’ve done everything you can to drive diversity in your candidate slate – expanded your active and passive sourcing, removed every extraneous requirement, added generous relocation packages, benefits plans, and competitive salaries. But, with all that, the diversity is just not there. That nagging thought you’ve tried so hard to avoid comes bubbling back up: “There just are no [demographic here] for this job.” Now what? Now you have an opportunity to become part of the solution to address the gaps in the candidate pool itself. Here’s one way: Rebranding When the lack of diversity is at the point of interest, when it isn’t the skills that are lacking, but the interest and appetite to apply, the problem may lurk in the way the position, organization, and/or industry is perceived. The perception of industries or roles may be so strongly correlated with certain personalities or demographics, that many don’t even consider it as an option so never bother looking or applying. Stereotypes, culture norms, organization reputation can all contribute to this problem. To address perception, rebrand. Take control of the narrative and breakdown the exclusive and uninviting perceptions. Everything from social media campaigns to community outreach to commercials can help move the brand. And... if you know a good Hollywood producer, a movie depicting more diversity in those roles definitely won’t hurt (it worked for Stormtroopers). #NoBias #Diversity #Hiringandpromotions
